|BAD WEATHER PREVAILS Rain Begins to Fall as Horses Reach Post in Second Race. First Renewal of Kentucky Handicap Since 1931 Feature of Card — Numerous Surprises. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 21.— Although weather was not conducive to record-breaking attendance, the racing at Churchill Downs today was viewed by a large crowd. Early in the day there was a promise of bright skies, but around noon cloud banks began to form and this threat of rain may have prevented a gathering of an even larger throng of racing enthusiasts. Before the second race got to the post, it began to rain and for the third the track was sloppy. The big attraction of the afternoon was the first renewal of the Kentucky Handicap since 1931, and it brought out a fashionable field to test speed and heart over the rather exacting distance of a mile and a furlong. At the time this stake was dropped from the Churchill Downs program, it was run as the Grainger Memorial Handicap and carried that title from 1924 to 1931, inclusive. From the time of its inception, back in 1913, when it was run at Douglas Park, to 1923, inclusive, it was under the same name as it is run today. It was transferred here from Douglas Park in 1919 and for each of its previous runnings, the distance was a mile and a quarter. Former winners include Exterminator, Cudgel, Borrow, Luke McLuke, King Gorin, Midway, Ed Crump. Woodtrap, Rudolfo, Cherry Tree, Modest, King Nadi, Flat Iron, Royal Julian, Toro. Easter Stocking and Gallant Knight. King Gorin and King Nadi each accounted for two runnings. A rank outsider in the betting, the Oddesa Farms Oddesa Maid, scored a surprise victory in the six furlongs opener, getting the decision by a head, under the energetic han-dhng of pudgy George South. Houstons Nogalo charged through it to a popular victory. The race was contested over six and a half furlongs, and at the end the Noah filly, guided by apprentice Lloyd Sisler, was in I front by a length and a half. The Tall Trees Stables Bill Donoghue, unbeaten this year, hung up his fourth straight victory when he made every post a winning one in the six furlongs Milner Hotel Purse, the fifth race on the card. Ramseys and Coppages Mucho Gusto out-finished Arabs Arrow in the Kentucky Handicap, with Eagle Pass taking third place. This was the first defeat suffered by Arabs Arrow in three races. Recent departures from Churchill Downs made ample room to take care of the few horses at Douglas Park and trainers of racers at the latter track have been asked to transfer their charges to the Downs track. . — •
