T~WHEEL!NG DOWNS N0TES~~T $ __$ Robert P. McAuliffe, member of the racing secretarys staff at Wheeling Downs, was an arrival Friday. McAuliffe will also act in the role of placing judge during the spring meeting here. Racing secretary William J. Shelley is still receiving applications for stalls from many prominent stables who wish to ship to Wheeling for the twenty-two-day meeting which opens on May 28. Milton Gutman, admissions head, stated I that the season reservations for boxes have been coming in briskly and feels sure that all boxes will be taken by the time opening day rolls around. John Kissane joined the official family now gathering at Wheeling Downs. He will I act as patrol judge and entry clerk at the Downs. Roy Dickerson and his starting crew have notified Walter H. Donovan, Wheeling Downs head, that they will arrive here Monday and will start schooling horses from the j Bahr starting gate, which will be in use I during the meeting here. Interest in the spring meeting which opens on May 28 has been very keen in the tri-state area. Many business men are trimming their windows in a racey fashion and streamers and banners are being placed in the downtown section of Wheeling. Ethu-siasm is running high and everyone, everywhere is eagerly awaiting the opening day. Fred Dew, who at one time raced a powerful stable of horses at the Island course, has been appointed to a post on the racing staff at Wheeling Downs. Dew was an arrival Friday and was very much impressed with the many improvements that have been made at the Downs. J. Booker has notified William J. Shelley he is shipping his stable of six horses to Wheeling Downs from Maryland. Accompanying him will be his brother, jockey R. Booker. ♦
