TEUFEL SCORES BY HEAD Defeats Peligroso II. in the Puritan Handicap at Suffolk Downs. "Pleasant Weather Attracts Largest Crowd of the Year for Sport — Bootless Surprises. BOSTON, Mass., May 21.— Ogden Phipps Teufel, an invader from New York, drove to ■ thrilling victory in the 0,000 added Puri- ; tan Handicap, mile and an eighth feature of ; a sunny half-holiday of racing at Suffolk Downs. At the end the thoroughbred from the Empire State had just a head to spare ! over W. V. McGraths Peligroso II., a South I American, which is eligible for the 550,000 Massachusetts Handicap and no weak hope for that event off todays effort. W. A. Carters Clodion was two and a half lengths off the battling leaders to take the third award. The latter was also shipped on from New York especially for the race. Eastport finished fourth. The warmest and brightest day of the season attracted the largest crowd that has come out for the sport in New England this j year. The official crowd count was 34,600. ! The stands, club house and betting rings I were jammed, and the wagering looked as if I it would soar to a new high. Over 00,000 j jm bet on the feature alone. CLODION FRACTIOUS. Clodion, fractious at the post, was placed on the outside of the gate by starter Eob Fiend. From that position, he streaked off in stride, took the lead at once and headed the field as they made the first turn. He was not able to draw free, however, White Hot fighting head and head with him until they were midway of the back stretch. There Pelisgroso II. drove to second place, moving tip smoothly on the outside of the field. Longden waited in fifth place with Teufel until the field began to bunch up in the run to the far turn. At this stage all of the early leaders except Peligroso II. hoisted the white flag, and Longden moved up to the pacemaking South American gladiator with Teufel. "HEAD AND HEAD." It was Teufel and Peligroso II. head and head, and nothing to choose between them as they thundered into the home stretch. I They were still head and head at the sixteenth pole, with Teufel enjoying an advantage that could be measured in inches. Peligroso II. never quit. In fact, under a lashing ride from Johnny Deering, he came on again right at the end after he appeared to falter momentarily, but Teufel and Longden were not to be denied this afternoon. The son of Diavolo kept his head in front to the end. Col. "One-Two" Ed Bradley sent forth his first horse and his first winner at the meeting in the three-quarters Turf Writers Handicap, secondary attraction on the card, Bootless carrying the famed green and white silks to victory by a length over Mrs. P. A. Shaws Stage Beauty. Mrs. A. R. Smiths Trouper was the same margin back of the runner-up, and Melodist finished fourth. The race was a stunner for the chalk boys, Clingendaal winding up next to last, at 1 to 2. Over 0,000 was bet on the horse. •
