CRETE HANDICAP NOMINATIONS Brilliant Band of Horses Named for ,000 Added Stakes. Lincoln Fields to Have Colony of Approximately One Thousand Horses for Coming Meeting. CRETE, 111., May 21.— The fleetest sprint-; ers and middle distance performers in train-i ing are included in stake nominations for ; the Crete and Steger Handicaps, to be staged during the opening week of the Lincoln Fields meeting, Col. Matt J. W.nn announced today. The beautiful south side track opens its twenty-four-day session on Decoration Day, and heading the fine eight-race card on the I holiday will be the Crete Handicap, at six | furlongs. When entries closed a week ago, i there were twenty-nine nominated, including Hal Price Headleys star sprinter. Preeminent, the French Lick Springs Stables Ma-I rica, winner a year ago; Crossbow II., Mucho | Gusto and other speed horses. In the Steger, to be run Saturday, June 4, I over seven furlongs, a total of forty-five ; were placed in nomination. Preeminent and I Marica also head the Steger list, which ni- cludes Dnieper, Arabs Arrow, Mountain Ridge, Nations Taste and Crossbow II. Both stakes, as well as the three which come later in the four-week meeting, cany an added value of ,000. The three other features, entries for which will be announced soon, are the Joliet Stakes, at five furlongs, for juveniles, the Lincoln Handicap, at a mile and a sixteenth, and the Francis S. Pea-I body Memorial Handicap, at a mile and an ] eighth, bcth for older horses. PLENTY OF HORSES. With nearly a thousand horses assured Tor the meeting and the stake nominations so j liberal, Lincoln Fields is looking forward to its best meeting in years.
