j | , ; j CALUMET FARM ENTERS TRIO Nominates Bull Lea, Sickle T. and Taxes for Illinois Derby. Birthday and Gangplank Entered by Green-tree Stable for Aurora Feature — Release Complete Eligible List on Tuesday. AURORA, 111., May 21.— Chances for a Chicago-owned racer annexing the seventh running of the 2,000 added Illinois Derby at the Fox Valley Jockey Club next Saturday were greatly enhanced by the nomination of three Calumet Farm horses, headed I by Bull Lea, which ranked as one of the choices in the pre-Derby wagering on the Kentucky Derby. Taxes and Sickle T. are the other two which were made eligible for the mile and a furlong feature. The nomination of Warren Wrights trio of hopefuls were received this morning from trainer Frank Kearns, and in the same batch of mail came two nominations from John M. Gaver, trainer of the western division of the Greentree stable. The contributions of the Greentree Stable are Birthday and Gangplank. TWENTY-FIVE ELIGIBLES. With the addition of the above five nominations i the total number of eligibles for the closing day stakes fixture was boosted to twenty-five, and the race is taking some definite shape. Judging from the calibre of entries on hand, the seventh running of the Illinois Derby will compare favorably with any of the runnings of the fixture in the past. Bull Lea, as the result of his two record-smashing triumphs at Keeneland, which was part of his preparation for the running of the sixty-fourth Kentucky Derby, ranked high among the participants in that event, and though the son of Bull Dog— Rose Leaves disappointed his legion of followers, most of which were Windy City enthusiasts, the Calumet colorbearer will be afforded an opportunity to redeem himself through a victory in the Illinois classic. Trainer Frank Kearns was profoundly disappointed with the failure of his charge in the Kentucky Derby, but still holds the opinion that Bull Lea is capable of taking the measure of some of the best three-year-olds of the current crop. With Lawrin, Kentucky Derby victor, among the eligibles for the Illinois Derby, Bull Lea will be given a chance to vindicate the judgment of his conditioner. RUNNING COMPANION. It is probable that Kearns will select either I Taxes or Sickle T. to serve as a running companion for Bull Lea. However, the selec- I tion will not be made until it is ascertained I how the horses stand the trip from Churchill Downs to Lincoln Fields early in the week. Racing secretary Richard A. Leigh, Sr., announced this morning that the complete list of Illinois Derby eligibles would be released Tuesday morning. This was decided on by the Fox Valley official to allow sufficient time for any nominations that might be placed in the mails prior to midnight tonight to reach here. There was no activity among the Derby candidates on the grounds this morning dur- ing the training period, due to the heavy i condition of the racing strip. The only elig- ible on the track this morning was A. G. Tarns Wise Fox Louisiana Derby winner, which cantered a mile and a half at a slow gait. ■ 4
