JAMES VICTORIOUS AT AURORA , IN GOELITZ SILKS m - — A FALL MARS FOURTH RACE Jean Dale Goes Down — Scurlock Escapes With Bruises. James Graduates From the Maiden Ranks in First Start — Heavy Footing Prevails for Sport. AURORA, 111., May 23.— A spill in which jockey Don Scurlock escaped with a shaking up, marked the running of the fourth race at the Aurora track this afternoon. Scurlock was astride Jean Dale, which fell shortly after the start of the contest, a test of four and one-half furlongs for maiden two-year-olds. Scurlock was rusht d to the track hospital, where he was found to have escaped with a few minor bruises and scratches. Jean Dale went down when she ran up on the heels of Grecian Time. The winner of the race was W. H. Goe-litz James, a juvenile son of St. James, making the first start of his career. Never far back, James, ridden by Dale Edwards, finished gamely in the run through the stretch and got up to score with a length and a half to spare. Teperwine was second, Oh Fudge third, and then came Grecian Time to lead home the others in the field of eleven. Teperwine was rushed into an early lead and a furlong from the end was showing the way by four lengths. Then he began to tire and was barely able to save second place a length from Oh Fudge. DELAYS THE START. Laurels Ruby delayed the start considerably by falling at the gate and casting herself in a stall. Overlooked in the betting, James paid 2.20 for in the mutuels. Todays racing was presented under overcast skies and on a heavy track. A fair-sized crowd, however, turned out despite the -unfavorable conditions. Small fields met in a majority of the seven races, but several of them developed close finishes to thrill the gathering. The opening event, a contest of six furlongs, went to the confidently supported Sir George, owned by P. L. Kelley. and handled by J. G. Wilson. An element of luck entered into the victory, for Sir George was able to save much ground on the turn whereas Gaming, which had been leading at the time, ran out badly entering the stretch at a loss of more than enough distance to reverse the order of finish. As it was, Sir George won by only a neck with Gaming beating Chicken Lady a length and a half for the place. GABE J. GRADUATES. The second race, originally carded as the seventh, saw Gabe J. turn back seven other route running platers over a mile and seventy yards for his maiden victory. With W. McCadden at the reins, Gabe J. came from a long way back to get the decision by a half length as Slip Knot finished second and Attauquechee third. The Corsicana Stable provided the winner : of the third race with Maderis which got home in front by a neck at the end of five and a half furlongs. Always well up. Maderis, ridden by Albert Bodiou, responded to hard urging in the run through the stretch I and got up near the end to beat out the strongly supported Willow Wand. Ogee was a bang-up third with Poison Cup leading home the others in the field of eleven. Rockrim, performing under the colors of Mrs. B. Harrison and guided by R. Morris, charged to a narrow victory in the fifth event, a contest of a mile and seventy yards. The Dunlin gelding got up to win by a jnose as Baby Joe beat Mint Box a half length for the place. Harold Holland has joined the ground crew of starter John Morrissey and will serve as one of the starters assistants throughout the impending Fairmount Park meeting.
