Howard and Trainer Tom Smith Both Confident of California Stars Condition. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 23.— Well satisfied with the preparations so far of Seabiscuit for his engagement with War Admiral next Monday in the Belmont Special at Belmont Park, Charles S. Howard, owner of the five-year-old son of Hard Tack and Swing On, nevertheless is eager to watch the horse in his next workout, tentatively set by trainer Tom Smith for Tuesday afternoon after the last race. The California sportsman was not present for Seabiscuits last two trials, being on a trip to Bermuda, and he was disturbed upon his return that the horse had not made a good impression on work watchers. Since conferring with trainer Smith, however, Howard has regained much of his confidence as to Sea-biscuits chances with War Admiral. After analyzing Seabiscuits last workout in comparison with that of War Admiral, Howard is satisfied that his colorbearer did just as well as the Samuel D. Riddle star, pointing out that the Hard Tack veteran went alone, while the son of Man o War had 1 two running mates, one for the first six furlongs and the other for the final half mile. War Admiral went a mile and one-quarter, whereas Seabiscuits trial was at a mile, but for the latter distance the time ; of the two horses compared favorably in Howards opinion. DIFFERENCE IN TRACK. Howard stated that the Belmont track was quite different from that at Santa Anita, where Seabiscuit worked so sensationally last winter in preparation for the Santa Anita Handicap, and though it was not ex-| actly what the horse likes, he would not be at any great disadvantage next Monday if the course is thoroughly dry underneath as well as on top. TAKEN TO SCHOOLING BARRIER. Seabiscuit was on the track today for a gallop of a mile after going twice around the mile training track Sunday. While out this morning he was taken to the schooling barriers for the accommodation of news reel photographers, but did not attempt any ! starting practice. Later he was similarly photographed upon his return to his stable. All was quiet and serene in the Glen Rid-J die stable today, George Conway having War | Admiral out for a leisurely gallop around j the mile and a half main course, accompanied by Army Banners.
