HELEN MAC GRADUATES Makes Auspicious Debut to Racing in Blossom Time Purse. Rains Spoil River Downs Program and Force Management to Offer Two Substitute Races. CINCINNATI, Ohio, May 23.— Helen Mac, daughter of Rolls Royce and Dangerillo, was graduated from the maiden ranks at her first asking when she accounted for the Blossom Time Purse, fourth and best race of a rain-soaked program, offered before a small crowd at River Downs this afternoon. Driving through the field in cyclonic fashion, Helen Mac, which flaunted the colors of Mrs. S. G. Baker, reached the end of four and one-half furlongs a length to the good. Sweepy and Sweeping Bow, furnished by James C. Ellis, were second and third and they were so closely aligned that the picture was needed to separate them. Rains early this morning again spoiled the program, and it was necessary to offer two substitute races. Although sunny skies pre- I vailed afterwards, rain again fell shortly be- | fore the opening of the program and con- I tinued intermittently during the afternoon. Despite the heavy and holding condition J of the track, favorites were in the limelight, although Jay D. Bane disappointed in the feature race. BY CLEAR MARGIN. Helen Mac was last as the field entered the stretch, but Frank Grill drove her forward and, taking command in the final forty yards, she rapidly drew away to her clear margin: Norman Sloat gave up the chase upon reaching the stretch, but Sweepy, which was forced to the outside for room, came again to nip Sweeping Bow, which moved into second place on the inside midway of the drive. A casualty came with the second race when Blacksod, the favorite, which lasted to finish second, broke down very badly. Winning honors went to Mrs. N. D. Thompsons Rustic Joe, which raced to the end of the six furlongs sprint eight lengths before Black-sod. Maguire came from far back and on the outside to take third honors. WILLIAMS SECOND WINNER. Williams was astride his second winner when he brought Casanard to the finish of the substitute third race an easy winner over Imperial Polly, Miss Gohi and seven others. Pripalador eliminated himself when he wheeled at the start. Favored by a feather of ninety-seven pounds, two of which were overweight, Lady Flash, from the stables of Miles and Kover, was an easy and surprise winner of the fifth race. Cloudy Weather, a strongly supported choice, was second, and Chinese Red finished third. Well ridden by Mario Quintero and on the inside throughout, the winner forged to the front entering the stretch and, drawing away rabidly, reached the finish two lengths before Cloudy Weather. Although forced to withstand a long drive and carried wide by .john Allen at the stretch turn, Cloudy Weather held on in fine style to be clear of Chinese Red at the close.
