NEAR FINALE AT LOUISVILLE Two Rich Fixtures Remain to Be Decided at Churchill Downs. Kentucky Oaks to Be Run Saturday and Bashford Manor on Mondays Holiday Card. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 23. -Only six more days of racing are on the Churchill Downs spring calendar, but two of the biggest, Derby Day excepted, still remain. They will come on Saturday and Monday, when two of Kentuckys most popular stakes, the Kentucky Oaks and the Bashford Manor-Stakes are to be renewed. The Oaks, a test of a mile and a furlong for three-year-old fillies, is as old as the Derby, and will be run for the sixty-four time on Saturday, while the Bashford Manor, five furlongs dash for two-year-olds, is down for decision on the final day of the meeting, Decoration Day. Each stake is endowed with ,000 in added money and will headline two of the most attractive cards of the entire local season. The Oaks, which is a sort of Derby for fillies, numbers many great mares among its winners, and this year again may show a horse destined to go on to real stardom. Some of the previous winners of the old stake which achieved fame in turfdom were Princess Doreen, Rose of Sharon, Easter Stockings, Black Maria, Alcibiades, Suntica, and Bronze Wing, just to mention a few Last year the race was won by Mars Shield, which since has shown herself to be a useful handicap performer. ILL-FATED SKY LARKING. Mars Shield is owned by the Milky Way Farm, which provided the last two winners ! of the Bashford Manor in Murph, and, last year the ill-fated Sky Larking. The Bashford Manor also has fallen to many youngsters which have gone on to stardom later in their careers, among them the Kentucky i Derby winner, Black Gold, and Roguish Eye, St. Bernard, Coldstream, Typhoon and Billy Kelly. The Oaks drew fifty-eight nominations, while a total of 115 two-year-olds have been made eligible for the Bashford Manor. Probable starters in the Oaks will come from among a dozen, including Anaflame and Handcuff, top ranking three-year-old fillies of the East; Dixieland, Crosi Keys, Shandon Queen, Fantine, One Jest. Shining Heels, Lenpola. Last Message, Harriett Ann | and Ma Hornidge. While not considered certain starters, sev- j eral others at the scene are not definitely i out of the race. A larger field is in prospect for the Bashford Manor, among those almost sure to ac- i cept the issue being Third Degree, Cherry Jam, Steady Don, Hello Cap, Royal Pam, i Unerring, Inscoelda, Myrica, Steel Heels, ; Likly Lad and Batter. While, of course, a few others which are training well but do I not enjoy the same reputation as some of the former may be sent to the post. Racing will be resumed tomorrow with a gocd program and the final week of sport j is expected to culminate in a climax of j interest second only to that engendered by the Kentucky Derby.
