SUFFOLK AVERAGING 91,105 Meeting Prospering Despite Steady Run of Bad Weather. Outstanding Stake Events on Program Ye| to Come — 0,000 Massachusetts Handicap Headliner. BOSTON, Mass., May 23.— Suffolk Downs will swing into the fourth week of its long meeting on Tuesday with a gratifying total and average mutuel handle despite cold, rainy and unseasonable weather on almost every afternoon of the session. As Saturdays sport opened ,866,575 had been bet through the machines, making an average of 91,105. The daily average was swelled to close to 00,000 by the week-end play, when perfect spring weather finally prevailed for the sport. This will be the last five-day week of the New England racing season, which does not end until late in November. Suffolk carded four "dark" Mondays in order to allow for extra Saturdays and holidays on the fifty-seven day schedule. Today is the final Monday when no racing will be held. Both Narragansett and Rockingham will run six days a week. It is amply evident that Suffolk will average 00,000 a day or more for the full meeting, barring some unforseen catastrophe. The weather should not be much better for the remainder of the season, it could hardly be worse and the biggest stakes are yet to come. In fact, the meeting did not really hit its stride until the close of Maryland racing brought several outstanding thoroughbreds to this point. The 5,000 Yankee Stakes, main three-year-old event of the New England season, and the 0,000 Massachusetts, richest handicap of the summer season in the East, are still in the offing. TWO STAKES THIS WEEK. Two stakes are on the program for the coming week. Wednesday will see the decision of the Joseph Tomasello Memorial Handicap, named in honor of the man who built Suffolk Downs, and whose son, Joe Tomasello, is still track superintendent of the plant. This event, for three-year-olds and upward, carries an added value of ,000. It is a six furlongs sprint and has attracted twenty-five of the fastest horses on the grounds. Secretary Gene Bury has assigned H. P. Headleys Preeminent the top package of 132 pounds but A. C. Comptons Clingen-daal, which had a trial for the race in a sprint on Saturday, is likely to be the starting high weight under 128. Amor, other highly regarded horses in the Tomasello are Deliberator, Accolade, Orientalist, Bill Farnsworth and Higher Cloud. The race may also mark the first appearance of Infantry under D. J. Sullivans silks. This fellow was purchased a week back by the Texan for the fancy price of 5,000. Meanwhile, New Yorkers can hardly be more interested in the decision of the Sea-biscuit-War Admiral race on Decoration Day. The champions are slated for a return engagement in the Massachusetts here, and may be asked to face Stagehand, among other top class horses. Seabiscuit will arrive at Suffolk Downs the day after the 00,000 race at Belmont Park. He will be accompanied by the entire Eastern division of C. S. Howards stable.
