GRASS CUTTER IN LIMELIGHT Rims One of the Fastest Races of His Career to Take Laurel Feature. Prevails Over Topheavy Favorite, Carvola, Which Fails to Overcome a Slow Start, Though Gaining at the End. LAUREL, Md., Oct. 11. Turning in one of the fastest races of his career, which covers nineteen starts, George D. Wideners improving three-year-old gelding,! Grass Cutter, accounted for the best offer-j ing on the ninth program of the Maryland j State Fair, Inc., today, when he defeated six other seasoned sprinters in the fourth j race, styled the Mistletoe Springs, a claiming . dash, at six furlongs, in which the seven starters under silks ranged in selling price, from ,000 to ,000. Covering the distance in 1:12, flat, to duplicate his previous sue-, cess, that took place on the fifth day of the meeting, the three-year-old son of Sickle, under the alert handling of jockey J. Gilbert, drove to the finish to take the measure of E. K. Brysons Carvola, which ruled a top- heavy favorite. One length separated the pair as Time Signal, from the M. A. Harris stable, finished five lengths away, to lead home C-Note, of the Milky Way Farm and the three others. BLUEFIELD SETS PACE The Mistletoe Springs was run as the fourth race on the oft-day program, and it saw Blucfield, from an inside position, uncovering a sharp turn of speed to supply the early pace. Grass Cutter furnished the contention for the Shandon Farm sprinter, he being at the heels of the pacemaker going down the far side, while Time Signal held to third position before C-Note, Zostera, Carvola and Faerie, which were rather strung out. With a half mile covered, Grass Cutter readily surged to the front, to displace Bluefield, and at the stretch turn, widened into a lead of three lengths, which aided him when Carvola made her charge. In the last furlong, after Bluefield and Time Signal weakened, Carvola circling around on the outside after her tardy beginning, closed with tremendous speed, and was catching the Widener sprinter at every stride, although one length short of her goal. C-Notc was beaten a half length for third. Pleasant conditions prevailed for the sport, and a good crowd was out for the entertainment. LARGE FIELD. One of the largest fields of the day met in the opening dash that was fashioned for two-year-old maiden fillies and it saw Braxton from the Christiana Stables, earning her racing diploma when she came from behind to triumph in a drive. Installed second choice for the contest that had decision over the three-quarter mile distance, jockey M. Peters had the filly across the line leading Mrs. G. D. Wideners Evening Light, which ruled favorite, by a daylight margin. In a tight fit for third, Zenana took that share of the spoils from Basswood. Ten homebred two-year-olds, readying for the Maryland Futurity, to be decided on Saturday, met in the third race, that was styled the Springsteel, and it gave Lady Solace, from the D. Christmas stable, her second victory of the meeting, when she qualified with honors to defeat A. G. Vanderbilts Balkan War, Shandon Farms Of Course, and the seven others that met over the six furlongs distance. Last away from the starting point and forced to overhaul each of her opponents while losing ground in the late stages, the daughter of Solace was under a tenacious drive to reward her supporters.
