UNDEFEATED SMART CRACK Continues on Her Winning Way to Take Sabine Purse at Jamaica. Scores Her Sixth Straight Victory, Though Hard Pressed at the End Yarberry Astrida Four Winners. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 11. Smart Crack continued on her winning way at Jamaica today as she ran her string of consecutive victories up to half a dozen in the six furlongs Sabine Purse. However, T. P. Morgans unbeaten filly failed to score in a manner generally anticipated, her winning margin being only a length and one-half. Pressing her hard at the end was Wheatley Stables Mattcrhorn, with the steadily closing Inscoelda three lengths away. Overanxiety on the part of apprentice Yarberry almost brought about the defeat of the gray daughter of Kiev Wise Crack. The filly was leading by slightly more than two lengths at the top of the stretch and apparently going along well within herself. Then Yarberry hit her with the whip and she bore out slightly. Well inside the furlong post and enjoying a comfortably lead, he cracked , down again and she went farther out. About fifty yards from the finish he stung her once more with his stick and she bolted sharply for the outer rail, a move which came mighty , close to costing her the race. Had she pursued a straight course she would have won by a more decisive margin. From a time standpoint it was a corking race, as the Texas-owned filly covered the distance in 1:12, the best time of the meeting for a two-year-old. Later in the afternoon, Yarberry rode his fourth winner. CARRIES 109 POUNDS. The conditions for the Sabine enabled Smart Crack to get in with 109 pounds and 1 she appeared unbeatable, going to the post at 2 to 5. The score gave Yarberry his third triple of the meeting, as he had taken the opener with Majority Vote and the Finite : Purse with Royal Eminence. It also com- pleted a double for the Morgan establishment and trainer Ed Snyder, that horseman 1 saddling Majority Vote for W. F. Morgan, j Smart Crack left the post more alertly than in her previous Jamaica start and . quickly opened up a clear lead on her com- pany. Rounding the turn she was under double wraps, with Yarberry looking back at , the others. She appeared to have all well beaten at the head of the home lane and then the apprentice made- what almost proved a fatal move. Matterhorn, a daughter of Diavolo, was shy on early speed, but moved up rapidly turning for home, with Longden cutting. for the inner rail when he saw Smart Crack start to bear out. She finished with great . determination in the last furlong in what j was decidedly the best effort in a half dozen starts. LEAVES POST SLOWLY. I Inscoelda, winner of the Lassie Stakes at Arlington Park, was packing top weight of 122 pounds and did not do at all badly. She j left the post very slowly to trail the field for about a quarter of a mile. Rounding the j turn she moved up steadily and finished with a nice flash of speed to earn third money. j Unerring, her stablemate, ran well for only a quarter mile, while Blue Fairy quit after 1 a half. The spot was too tough for Historical, -the only other starter. i Warren Yarberry stretched his winning mounts to four for the day when he scored on J. B. Partridges Suntime in the sixth, a six furlongs dash for platers. In a stretch drive he brought the son of Sun Meadow home winner over A. G. Illichs Stones Landing, while old Isaiah saved third from Bub- . blesome. i -
