HER HAWTHORNE LEADER Eastern Owner Tops Money Winneri of Recent Meeting. Cicero Track Is Unfortunate in Matter of Weather and Counter Attractions Racing High Class. Hawthorne, most accessible of Chicagos major tracks, was cursed with an unprecedented stretch of bad weather and forced to compete with the great pennant-winning stretch drive of the Chicago Cubs and then the world series during its September 5 to October 8 meeting. The result was a meeting that by no stretch of the imagination could be classed in the same breath with the brilliant session of last year. However, Hawthorne had a good meeting, one of the best of the Chicago season from the standpoint of racing. Only the bad weather kept Sea-biscuit out of the Gold Cup and had the public been sure that the Howard star would start in the Gold Cup the old Cicero track might haye staged the biggest day of the current season. The Gold Cup, piece de resistance of the programs, fell to the sterling mare Esposa, which races for William Ziegler, Jr., owner of El Chico, juvenile champion of the year. Owner and horse naturally headed their divisions as money winners. The Gold Cup had a net value of 0,825 to the winner. With purses averaging ,000, Hawthorne gave away 54,365 during thirty days of racing, the daily average being ,478.83. Jimmy Ashcroft and R. Conley finished the meeting on even etrms in number of winners ridden, each piloting twenty-eight. L. Copenhaver saddled ten winners and was the leading trainer.
