LOVELY SISTER BY NECK Daughter of Peter Hastings Outstays Courageous Darby Du. Thrilling Finishes Enliven Sport at River Downs Jockey Meloche Pilots Pair of Winners. i . CINCINNATI, Ohio, Oct. 17. In one of the many thrilling finishes which featured an all-claiming race program, offered for the .Opening of River Downs first full week of racing, Lovely Sister, furnished by William Smith, was a driving winner of the fourth event and best race. Driving to the front when inside the final furlong of the six furlongs dash, the daughter of Peter Hastings held a neck advantage over Darby Du, which beat Rugged Red by a nose for second. Bugle Bell, the favorite, was fourth, but she was some three lengths back of Rugged Red. Lovely Sisters triumph halted a parade of favorites and second choices, which started with the opening race. Her victory was largely due to the good handling of Charley Beasy, who had her in close attendance off the pace and drove her into the lead when Tibi began to weaken. Although unable to -draw clear, Lovely Sister held on in fine orm as Darby Du and Rugged Red, the latter on the inside, came with their belated jchallenges. RACE AS TEAM. Tibi and Miss Wenonah battled as a team "during the opening quarter and when the latter gave way, the winner moved into second place. Entering the stretch, Beasy was "forced to send Lovely Sister to the outside of Tibi and in resolute fashion she marched into the lead to hold it to the end. Bugle Bell held a prominent position from the start, but after reaching third place in the stretch, she tired and Darby Du and Rugged Red drove past her with ease. Meloche was astride his second winner when he steered Larry M. to an easy victory in the fifth race, at one mile and forty yards. Don Pancho and Rosa Dear reached the finish a nose apart and two and one-half lengths before Manly which was well --supported. Wild Blonde was backed into Jfavoritism but after leading the field to the final half mile, she gave way to be a well-beaten seventh. Opening the program with a popular victory, Money Getter carried the Snow Flake Stable colors of Bass and Van to a three-quarters of a length triumph over Just High. "Three lengths back was Jildac, with Fairy Footfall lasting to take fourth laurels. Me-! loche hustled the winner along from the -start and he drove past Fairy Footfall approaching the final quarter. POPULAR VICTORY. Providing another popular score, Royal Broom, co-favorite with Braxton Bell, the second horse, won the second race, also at six furlongs. Dark Amber, a "fielder," carried off third honors, five lengths back of Braxton Bell. He tired in the last stages and Braxton Bell, holding on in great style, was a short length back of him at the end. A thrilling finish and another triumph for the favorite came with the. three-quarters third race when Red Go, Ancient Times, a "fielder," and Siva finished heads apart. Steadied along while Ancient Times, Misa Twinkling and Siva dominated the pace for five furlongs, Red Go moved up with a rush to down Ancient Times at the finish. Peppy closed With a rush to garner fourth laurels. Excepting Miss Twinkling, which quit after a half mile, the others of the field of twelve never were factors.
