DEAD HEAT AT DUFFERIN PARK Freestone and Doer Finish on Even Terms After Two Trips Around the Track Favorites Rule. TORONTO, Ont., Oct. 17 The Indian Summer Purse, at one mile and one-sixteenth, featured the second days sport at Dufferin Park. The program was recruited entirely from the claiming ranks with favorites predominating the majority of the events. A large crowd was on hand for the matinee while the weather was decidedly warm and the racing strip was at its best. A dead heat, the second of the meeting, featured the running when Freestone, from the stable of G. W. OConnor, and W. F. Mon-teiths Doer finished on even terms, two lengths in advance of G. Andersons Crinoline. Freestone was ridden by E. T. Moore, who figured in Saturdays dead heat while astride Tea Jester, and Doer was in charge of the veteran, N. Foden. It was the second winning effort of the afternoon for Foden, he having piloted D. Garritys Background in the opening event. GOOD START. There was only a half-minute delay at the start, and Clark had them away in good order. Freestone, breaking from the outside, was the first away from the stalls, while Crinoline broke in second place before Doer. Freestone sprinted into a commanding lead as they rounded the first turn and leaving the back stretch was six lengths clear before Doer, which raced in advance of House Afire. After completing the course for the first time, Freestone held a four lengths advantage, while Doer had come clear of House Afire. As they sped through the back stretch the second time around Doer began to advance on Freestone and Moore was forced to go to the whip to maintain his lead, i Rounding the far turn, Doer moved up on the outside of Freestone and he appeared to have overtaken the leader. Here he hung and Freestone moved away again as the stretch was reached. Foden then placed Doer to strong urging, and although bearing out through the short stretch run, he responded gamely and was up in the final stride to be on even terms with Freestone.
