SHREVEPORT OPENS SATURDAY Louisiana Town to Benefit by Coming Meeting Up to 6,000 Per Week Horsemen Active for Fortnight. SHREVEPORT, La., Oct. 17. More than 110 men will be engaged in presenting and supervising the horse racing at the State Fair Grounds track here beginning Saturday, according to announcement today by E. B. Weiss, head of the racing division of the Louisiana State Pair. Excepting only a few experienced men who will fill the key positions in the vaiious departments, all situations at the State race course will be filled by residents of Shreveport and other Louisiana cities. That the race meeting is a boon to local employment and commerce can be seen from the figures below. It is estimated that the costs of maintaining approximately 400 horses in training are 6,000 per week. Breaking down this amount the cost of feed for the horses is about ,560 per week, salaries and commissions" to trainers ,000 per vyeek, exercise riders 00 per week, board for exercise riders 00 per week, plating 60 per week and veterinary and saddlery and other incidentals 00 per week. And to this might be added express, freight or van charges to and from Shreveport. Besides the men who will be active in overseeing the racing, the operation of the betting department, policing the grounds, handling the gates and attending other details in connection with the racing division over 500 others, this group composed of jockeys, trainers, owners, grooms, platers, veterinarians, kitchen help, laborers, track crew and racing equipment makers will be active at the local track during the period of the meeting. Almost without exception all in the latter group are on the grounds and stable operation and training expenses have been going on locally for a fortnight.
