Seventh Victory Chalked Up by Texas-Bred Gelding Unusually Large Crowd Turns Out for Opener. I - t NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 17. Liberty Flight, capable three-year-old sprinter in the j stable of T. P. Morgan, running back to the t form displayed at Belmont Park, proved a 1 most convincing winner of the New Rochelle 1 Handicap, the short six furlongs dash which , was the headline attraction at Empire City, opening today for a two-week period, which will bring to a close the regular metropoh- , tan turf season. At the finish the son of , Liberty Limited and High Flight was two s lengths in advance of The Fighter, which was going in the same fashion to save the place by half a length from He Did, recent , winner of the Interborough Handicap at i Jamaica.- The runner-up races for W. F. , Morgan, whose brother owns the winner, and. the entry was the hottest choice of the day, going to the post at 3 to 5, after opening at 7 to 10. . The score marked the seventh in fourteen 1938 chances for the Texas-bred gelding and completed a double for the Lone Star State, as Ciencia, from the King Ranch, had taken the previous dash. It added ,275 to Liberty Flights earlier earnings. There was an unusually large crowd out to greet the thoroughbreds upon their return to Westchester County, with perfect wetaher and a close observance of form marking the inaugural. LONGDEN ON WINNER. Johnny Longden, who had taken the opener in easy fashion with City Judge, had the same sort of a ride atop Liberty Flight. He broke the-Texan away swiftly and had little trouble taking command in the run to the first turn. Rounding that the three-year-old opened up on the others and turned for home well in the clear. Stung but once with the whip at the top of the front lane, he drew off quickly and at the finish was in hand. The Fighter broke fast, but was eased off the pace when his running mate went to the front.- Workman brought him on again turning for home and he moved into second place. This he held to the finish With no undue urging, though he had no chance to catch the flying leader. He Did, packing top weight of 126 pounds, was in an excel-! lent position behind the early pace and moved up steadily from the quarter post to the eighth marker. In the final furlong he was hanging. Clodion made a bluff on the I turn and then was done, while Sunsun and Go Home never were factors. Mrs. C. C. Hotards City Judge, the favor-: I ite, proved best of the plater juveniles that I met in the opening five and three-quarters I furlongs dash. He won with something to spare over Chalmac, from the Crescent Sta-: ble, with Mrs. Clara Lyons Cantovino saving third from Light Year easily enough.
