POLICE GUARD LINER BREMEN NEW YORK, N. Y., April 15. Cutting its stay to fourteen hours in order to make up for time lost in recent storms, the liner Bremen sailed for Europe Saturday after a spectacular departure, in which 100 policemen guarded boat and pier in fear of communist demonstrations. The Bremen arrived in New York Friday, carrying a record-breaking cargo of 1,300 tons, as German boats increased their cargoes to evade the new 25 per cent import tax, which goes into effect against Germany next Saturday. The Hansa docked Saturday with 5,800 tons of expensive imports. It was reported that communist groups, scheduled to meet in the Bronx, planned to appear off the pier, but failed to show up.
