RICHER STAKES AT TORONTO Five ,000 Features to Be Offered at Coming Spring Meetings. Inducements Held Out to American as Well as Canadian Owners to Race at Ontario Tracks. TORONTO, Ont., April 15. There was good news for the owners of handicap horses in these parts with the announcement from A. E. Dyment, chairman of the Incorporated Canadian Racing Association, that there will be five ,000 added stakes offered horsemen at the approaching spring meetings on major Toronto tracks. These are in addition to the regularly carded stakes, and if the response justifies they will become permanent fixtures. Announcement of this increase in stakes offerings was withheld pending the arrival of racing secretary Pat Galliger, who will officiate on all Incorporated Canadian Racing Association tracks this season and who arrived in Toronto a few days ago and was in conference with Palmer Wright, representing the Ontario Jockey Club; Fred S. Livingston, representing Thorncliffe Park, and Fred S. Orpen, representing Long Branch. Announcement of details of one of the three new races, the Queens Cup, at one mile and seventy yards, to be run on opening day at Woodbine Park, May 20, was made some time ago. The other ,000 stake at the Ontario Jockey Club meeting will be the King Edward Gold Cup, which formerly carried a ,200 added value. This will be at one mile and a sixteenth. DETADLS NOT WORKED OUT. At Thorncliffe Park, the Bryan and OHara Memorial Handicap has been increased from ,500 added to ,000 added, while an entirely new race of ,000 added will also be run at the meeting. Details of this new race have not been worked out as yet, but will be announced in due course. Long Branch will also inaugurate a new stake of the same added value, ,000, and here, too, no further details are available as yet, but it is understood the plan will be to gradually increase the distance from the mile and seventy yards of the Queens Cup, opening day at Woodbine Park, to possibly a mile and one-quarter for the last of the series of ,000 prizes at Long Branch, providing conditions permit. There is nothing definite on this score, however. This series of worthwhile prizes, in addition to the various other opportunities for handicap performers, as well as the rich events for home-breds and for juveniles in both Canadian-bred and open classes, combine to make a most attractive picture for the spring season in Toronto. They should not only accomplish the desired result of retaining the best Canadian-owned horses at home for the season on Torontos major tracks, but may well bring back some of the better stables from the United States, which, at one time, included the Ontario tracks regularly in their itineraries. NO REASON TO LEAVE NOW. Lack of continuity of stakes opportunities has long been a bone of contention between certain track managements and some of the larger Canadian establishments, biit there should be no need for owners of the better-class horses to leave this territory to find opportunity for their horses during the Toronto season, at least. Thus the condition books of the three Toronto mile tracks will look mighty attractive to horsemen this spring. Woodbine will have its Queens Cup, Kings Plate, King Edward Gold Cup, Victoria Stakes, Woodstock Plate, richer Bryan OHara Memorial, as well as many attractive overnight events. Thorncliffe will have its Prince of Wales Plate, richer Bryan and OHara Memorial, as well as the new ,000 prize. Long Branch will offer its ,000 Orpen Memorial Handicap and the new ,000 stake, and Dufferin Park will provide incentive for the handicap horses to remain in this territory for a chance at its ,000 Hare Memorial Handicap.
