i r , . , THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1939 NO COMPETITION By NORBIS KOYDEN Vmm i t Boy Waldron, trainer of the extensive Milky Way Farm stable, has been quoted as saying that No Competition was the best Kentucky Derby candidate in his charge. The colts record proves that. The son of Bull Dog and Aloof, by North Star TJL, also may be deemed the best three-year-old prospect to carry the silks of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, although some of the others may come along smartly later in the season. No Competition won three of his eleven starts as a juvenile, including the Grand Union Hotel Stakes after running second to Thingumabob in the Arlington Futurity. He also was third to Porters Mite and Impound in the Champagne Stakes when the former established a new worlds record for six and one-half furlongs. Unquestionably improvement will have to be shown by No Competition to prove a factor among the three-year-olds this season, but it may not have to be much. What should aid him more is steadiness, and that may be forthcoming when he settles down to running over a distance of ground, if that is what he cares to do rather than sprint. The first start by the Milky Way colt was in June at Lincoln Fields, where he ran five, furlongs in :59, equalling the track record, to defeat Lightspur by a head. He was fifth in the Hyde Park Stakes at Arlington Park in his second effort after leading into the stretch, the five and one-half furlongs being run in 1:04. No Competition equalled this time in his next outing, an allowance affair, as he defeated T. M. Dorsett by six lengths. Then came his Arlington Futurity performance, in which he was second all the way, but unable to give Thingumabob much of a challenge in the stretch over the drying-out track that prevailed. After a brief freshening up, No Competition came back to capture the Grand Union Hotel Stakes in handy fashion, going to the front in the stretch and pulling away to defeat Hash by two lengths, as Third Degree was third and Ariel Toy was fourth. .Hi3 time for the three-quarters was 1:12. In the handicap for lady owners, he was a stout-closing third to Roman Hero, beaten slightly more than a length, as he carried top weight of 124 pounds. Trying the Aqueduct course, No Competition displayed a poor effort in the Babylon Handicap, won by Johnstown, but he demonstrated marked improvement at Belmont in the Champagne, in which he held on stubbornly to be beaten only a length and one-half as Porters Mite covered the route in the record time of 1:14. In another stride he might have wrested place honors from Impound. Unable to give weight to Lovely Night and Cherry Jam, the son of Bull Dog ran third to them in an overnight handicap over the straight course at Belmont Park, after which he laid off for several weeks until placing second to Ariel Toy in an allowance sprint at Laurel. After another lapse, he ran unplaced in the Sagamore Handicap at Pimlico to conclude his two-year-old campaign. It seemed apparent that he wasnt at himself during the fall. He made one start at Oaklawn Park in preparation for the Arkansas Derby, being a tiring fourth, but did not try for the stake because of the muddy going. No Competition is bred similarly to Tiger, but he doesnt appear to have enough on his distaff side to make him a good distance-running prospect. His dam is by North Star HI.,, while his second dam is by Pebbles, the sister of which, Stepping Stone, is the colts fourth dam. Stepping Stone also was a sister to Cataract and half-sister to Runny-xnede and Ultimus. . Among the other Milky Way three-year-olds are On Location, Giles County, Magic Key, Time Please, Up the Creek and Sports Writer, with the most likely being Giles County, a son of Gallant Fox and Bonnie Etoile, by Wrack, which won the Albany Handicap when Eight Thirty was disqualified. His. second dam was a sister to Chatter-ton. His breeding on both sides suggests development. Up the Creek, like No Competition, a son of Bull Dog and having no apparent liking for an "off" track, appears more solidly bred than the latter, being from a daughter of Wildair, which is a half-sister to Watersplash, with the second dam being a sister to Horron, by McGee, with the fourth dam also producing the good stayers Rockminister and Captain Alcock.
