Kentucky Derbys of Past Charts and Future Books 1927 4 The 1927 Kentucky Derby was preceded by some rather puzzling future book wagering. True, J. E. Wideners Osmand was the favorite right from the start and remained so until within a few days of the race. But do you remember Rip Rap, second choice, later to fade away to 15 and then come back strong to be quoted at 6 to 1 in pre-post odds? Scapa Flow oponed at 10 to 1, receded to 12 and then down to 6. A big splurge on Hydromel brought the Camden colt down from 200 to 20 to 1. However, the Derby resulted in a Whitney victory, no surprise to the big crowd present to see the race, who made the entry of Bostonian and Whiskery favorite, although both horses opened at 20 to 1 in the future books. Whiskery won in a close and hard-fought battle with Osmand, while Jock was third and Hydromel fourth. What happened to the others which were well thought of in the early betting may be found in the reproduction of the chart, here presented : FIFTH RACE 1 1-4 MILES. Woodtrap, May 21, 19212:037106. HYDROMEL showed a fine performance and continued gamely in the stretch. BOSTONIAN was far out of it for a half mile and closed a big gap. BUDDY BAUER also closed a big gap from a slow beginning. FRED JR.. began slowly and finished -well,- closing a big gap in the last half mile. SCAPA FLOW was done after a half mile. RIP RAP raced far out of it for most of the .way.
