NARRAGANSETT READY Late Wlail Increases the Number of Eligibles for Stakes. Fighting Fox Assigned 122 Pounds for Spring Handicap Meade Will Ride Early Delivery in Stake. PAWTUCKET, R. I., April 20. Late mails from distant points today increased considerably the number of horses nominated for the four stakes to be run at Narragansett Park during the spring meeting which starts Saturday, April 22. The ,000 added Spring Handicap, feature event of opening day, drew twenty-one nominations including some of the best speed horses now in training. The stake loomed as the most closely contested race ever to be run in New England so early in the season. "Sunny Jim" Fitz-simmdns, trainer of the Belair Stud, notified the management that Fighting Fox would accept the top weight of 122 pounds and would be a certain starter. To make it doubly sure that the stake would be worthy of a Gansett opening day, Tom Thorp brought word from Max Hirsch that Mrs. Parker Comings Thanksgiving was fit and ready and would arrive here this afternoon. Coming on top of arrival of Mrs. W. Plunket Stewarts Early Delivery and the assurance that Don Meade would be here to ride this speedster nothing more was needed to as- ASSIGNS WEIGHTS. Racing secretary Bob Shelley assigned Fighting Fox top weight of 122 pounds and Thanksgiving ranks next with 116 and Early Delivery, 115. Wise Prince gets in with 113 pounds, Clodion drew 112 and Mansco 108. Pit Terrier and Sirasia are in with the low imposts of 100 pounds. Other probable starters and their weights are Bold Turk 107, Regal Sun 107, War Minstrel and Woodsaw 106, Be Blue and Panther Creek 105, Gallant Stroke, 104, Be Jabbers, U-Boat, Gay Balko and Genie Palatine 103 each. The Portsmouth Handicap, ,000 added, one mile and one-sixteenth, for three-year-olds and upward, to be run April 29, drew twenty nominations: Isolater, Fighting Fox, Cisneros, Be Jabbers, Polly Hastings, War Minstrel, Genie Palatine, Panther Creek, OBantam, Count Valiant, Prince Derek, Our Ketcham, Wise Prince, Somali, Pasteurized, Continued on twenty-eighth page.
