i EL CHICOS FAST WORK FOR i ! WOOD MEMORIAL j . -...A NEW YORK, N. Y., April 20 It has been decided that William Ziegler, Jr.s El Chico will pass up the Stuyvesant Handicap at Jamaica Saturday and be reserved for the 0,000 Wood Memorial to be run over the same course just a week before the Kentucky Derby. The Stuyvesant is a six-furlong dash against the mile and seventy yards of the Wood, a much more convincing test for any candidate for the Kentucky Derby. That the son of John P. Grier and La Chica will show to better advantage than he did when he was nosed out by Gilded Knight, for the first defeat of his career, is generally expected. He has been galloping steadily for Matt Brady at Belmont Park. This morning, through the muddy going, he went along for a handy mile in 1:40. It was a move that showed progress in his training and there is confidence he will be I a good horse on April 29, when he races in the Wood. While El Chico was having his mile gallop at Belmont Park, James Fitzsimmons had Johnstown out at Aqueduct, and he was breezing along for seven furlongs in 1:32. The Paumonok winner has all his speed and should he be sent to the nost in the Stuyvesant, will be a hard horse to beat. Another notable of the work hours at Belmont Park was Samuel D. Riddles War Admiral. The son of Man o War and Brush Up is an eligible for the Excelsior Handicap, to b decided on May 6, and he has been showing he can readily keep that engagement. George Conway has been going along slowly with the five-year-old, but he goes about his every task cheerfully, and his speed could be sharpened up in short order. His task this morning was an easy mile in 1:45.
