STAR STEPPER moved up steadily on the outside after going half the distance and, although forced wide on the stretch turn, took the lead, but was doing his best at the end to hold SHASTA KLICK. The latter continued gamely after being overtaken by the winner. MASTER JEAN was in close quarters repeatedly. HOLLYWOOD ZAR moved up gamely on the back stretch, but tired after taking a good lead. MERCED tired after being in close quarters on the stretch turn. GREEN JADE was also in close quarters and tired after racing into contention. ALASKAN moved up fast through the stretch and, under strong riding, wore down CLARCAROLE in I the last eighth, winning in the closing strides. The latter saved ground on the stretch turn, took command when SOUTHERN BELLE raced wide and finished well. SOUTHERN BELLE made the pace, but lost her chance by going wide on the stretch turn. HIGH WARIA had early speed and continued fairly well through the stretch to outgame JACK BE NIMBLE. The latter tired near the finish. SHASTA BUDDY was going fairly well at the finish. SPRING FLOOD went to the front early and, shaking off AU MAN after going half the distance, bore out in the stretch, but finished well. GIPSY MINSTREL was close up all the way. TRIPLANE was in close quarters repeatedly while racing on the inside and had little chance. AU MAN and CAYENNE dropped back when the real racing began. GILBERT ELSTON followed SWEET BETTY under light restraint in the early stages and, moving up steadily in the stretch, took the lead in the last fifty yards and won under urging. SWEET BETTY, racing gamely, went to the front early, opened up a good lead and held on fairly well. BEAU MEDDLER went around on the outside on the stretch turn, challenged gamely, but was not good enough. UNPARALLED lacked early speed and closed a big gap, but seemed to be sore.
