Highlight in Baltimore Handicap — New Drains for Track. BALTIMORE, Md., April 29.— The Maryland Jockey Club course at Pimlico will open another pretentious stake-a-day meeting, on Monday with the ,500 added Baltimore Spring Handicap, featuring the inaugural card. Ten crack sprinters were named for the event, which will sound the bugle for the first of twelve stakes, ending up with the Preakness on Saturday, May 13. Presenting an old face familiar to thousands of race fans throughout the country, the Old Hilltop course is iiever-the-less spic and span with gleaming paint and some practical improvements. Foremost of the changes which will greet the customers is a modern "tote,r* board. .The mechanical wagering device is not new to Pimlico, though, and the new board is merely an improvement over the original facility. The new steeplechase course, rebuilt following the removal of the infield hump, is in tip-top shape, and it is expected there will be a daily jumping feature for the crosscountry fans. TRACK IMPROVES. The racing strip has been improved over the winter months with the installation of an entire new drainage system and general resurfacing work. The meeting will also introduce the new photo chart camera to eastern horse fol-" lowers for the first time. The photo-finish contrivance is said to be the ultimate in depicting accuracy and speed in the finish of races. The inaugural card holds promise of ex- cellent sport. The stakes feature at six furlongs for three-year-olds and up will see Sun Egret endeavoring to repeat his Havre de Grace opening-day triumph. Facing the A. C. C. Stable star will be J. Y. Christmas Rough Time, a stakes winner at Bowie early in April, and Winston Guests Drudgery, two-time winner at the Susquehanna course. Others in the field will be Old Rosebush, Battle Jack, Accolade, Rehearsal, Prer eminent, Rissa and Conquer. The Mt. Royal, fourth event, for three-™ year-olds at a distance of a mile and seventy yards, drew ten good second-season thor-, oughbreds. Serving as secondary attraction, the race will see two Preakness hopefuls in Brandywine Stables Guyencourt and Star- mount Stables Shambles. The two will be opposed by eight others, inluding Millsdale Stables good three-year-old, Sun Lover. 2:15 POST TIME. Post time for the racing at Pimlico has been fixed for 2:15 p. m. Eastern Standard Continued on thirty-ninth page. INAUGURALAT PIMLICO Continued from first page. Time, with the "daily double" closing at 2:00 p. m. These times will obtain every day except Preakness Day when they will be advanced one-half hour. The "double" will be on the first and second races. The course is located within the city limits of Baltimore and is easily accessible by auto or bus connecting from the Pennsylvania and Baltimore and Ohio Railroad terminals. The meeting will be the first conducted under the presidency of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, elected to that office in the Maryland Jockey Club last December. The sportsman-owner is the main factor in the progressive policies of the association, particularly in the distribution of large purses to horsemen and the improvement of facilities for the general public. Edward J. Brennan replaces Marshall Cas-sidy in the stewards stand and will serve with George Brown, Jr., and William Har-ron. Brennans place in the judges stand will be occupied by John Brennan. No other changes in official positions were made for the meeting. Matt Daiger is the general manager and will be starting his fortieth year at Pimlico.
