Xalapa Clown Also Gets Slow Work Saturday : Morning— Yale o Nine Appears Certain Starter. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 29.— With many of the principal Kentucky Derby horses un- : der silks during the afternoon, when candi- i dates for the 0,000 race had their busiest 1 public session of the spring season, the im- j portance of private training moves and other 1 Derby developments were overshadowed to- i day. The Wood Memorial Stakes at Jamaica and the Daniel Boone Purse at Churchill i Downs held the interest of turfdom as Americas racing fans began to preen themselves for their annual Derby pilgrimages to -Louisville a week from today. Here at Churchill Downs, W. L. Branns : Challedon and W. E. Boeings Porters Mite, two of the principal invading candidates, re-s ceived their first introduction to the Derby battle ground. They arrived here yesterday from Havre de Grace and this morning, showing no ill effects from their trip, were given leisurely gallops around the main course. Louis Schaefer, trainer of Challedon, does not plan to start the Brann colt in a race before the Derby, but Ted Horning. conditioner of Porters Mite, plans to send j his charge after the Derby Trial Stakes here j next Tuesday. OTHER TRAINING MOVES. Another of the more prominent Derby candidates, Mrs. Bessie Franzheims Xalapa Clown, also made a gallop this morning, and trainer A. C. Dettwiler probably will put him through a short spin tomorrow morning. Among the second flight nominees seen in training moves this morning were W. H. Whitehouses American Byrd, Thomas D. Taggarts Yale o Nine, Mrs. Cecil Gregorys Lostagal and Mrs. Ethel V. Mars On Loca-j tion. Lostagal, which is. receiving his Derby preparation at Douglas Park, continues to train in splendid fashion *nd in covering the mile and a furlong this morning in 1:56 went very handily and showed no signs of the slight shoulder soreness he developed sev-1 eral days ago. Going along steadily, the son of Hadagal traveled the first quarter in :244/6, half mile in :49%, three-quarters in 1:15 and the mile in 1:42%. Lostagals 1 next important test will come in Tuesdays Trial Stakes, according to trainer J. R. Gregory. j American Byrd, another of the outsiders j in the Derby picture, also impressed in a nine furlongs move, going the first quarter in :24%, half mile in :49, three-quarters in 1:15%, mile in 1:41% and the full distance in 1:55. He was under a light drive near the end* GOOD WORKOUT. Yale o* Nine, which looms a certain starter in next Saturdays 0,000 special, was sent a similar distance, which he negotiated in 1:56%, energetically handled the last three-ie eighths. After stepping the quarter in :25%, Yale o Nine ran the half mile in :50%, six furlongs in 1:16% and the mile in 1:43. The Derby prep of On Location was con-ie fined to a mile and his time for the distance was 1:42%, an effort he accomplished in handy fashion. His fractional time was :25 for the quarter, :49% for the half and 1:16% Lfor three-quarters. Heather Broom, John Hay Whitneys winner of Keenelands Blue Grass Stakes, still is in Lexington, but he is expected at the Downs early next week. Trainer Earl Sande is to work the Whitney three-year-old either Monday or Tuesday over the Keecnland track and then transfer him to the scene of the Derby.
