SKY EMPRESS came very fast ncaring the stretch turn and, although forced to come around several horses on the turn, got to the front an eighth out and was never in serious danger thereafter. MAY MUSIC was pinned in close quarters next to the rail after entering the stretch and was shut off twice before getting free, then came to the outside and was going strongly at the end. BORN BLACK had early speed, raced gamely after being headed by POMPOUS GENIE and was going well at the end. POMPOUS GENIE was used up getting to the front and, making the pace, tired near the end. BELLES LAST quit badly after making a bid on the stretch turn. ARIZONA KID was all over the track. MAD COUNT closed some ground. Overweight — Sky Empress, 2 pounds; Pompous Genie. 3; Santa Monica. 2. PIPE DOWN, outrun early, came fast in the middle of the track through the stretch to get to the front near the end under urging and won in a drive. SPORTING GREEN responded gamely to urging in the stretch to catch DRINKWATER nearing the end, but was unable to resist the winner. DRINKWATER, hard held while making the early pace, withstood a challenge from TOROBANG rounding the far turn to draw out and, saving ground in the stretch, raced fairly well to the finish. TORQUIL lacked early speed, but was going fastest at the end. FORT SPRINGS was forced to race wide throughout. TOROBANG tired in the stretch. ROYAL REIGH, well up from the start, got through an opening nearing the far turn to challenge the leader and, getting to the front on the stretch turn, saved ground and drew out easily in the last eighth. GILBERT ELSTON was taken back early and made a strong move through the stretch to outfinish ORBRIDGE. The latter had good early speed, but tired under his weight near the finish. CARITRE was done after making a brief move in the back stretch. DANKE SCHON ran away five-eighths while en route to the post and quit badly after showing some early speed. MASK AND WIG broke in motion to beat the others away and, taken under slight restraint early, withstood a challenge from TOWNSMAN rounding the far turn and another from PIT BULL in the stretch to show the way to the end and won with speed in reserve. PIT BULL moved up strongly on the inside nearing the stretch turn and continued to save ground to the end to hold the others. KUMREIGH was outrun to the last quarter, then came strongly to finish fastest. SUFFERN raced evenly. TOWNSMAN was used up trying to catch the winner in the early stages and tired under his weight in the stretch. COMMENDABLE dropped out of it after going half the distance. EIGHTH RACE 1 1-16 MILES. JUNGO got to the front early, was fairly well rated while making the pace and saved ground in the stretch, but just lasted to hold TRANSBIRD. The latter, closest to the winner most of the way, gained stoutly, but steadily through the stretch and was beaten but narrowly. TEMPER was in close quarters in the back stretch, but was going fairly well at the finish. WYOMING DAISY had a rather rough trip, being in close quarters several times. SHASTA SONG tired.
