THANKSGIVING ATONES 1 Scores in 0,000 Added Philadel- phia Handicap at Havre. i Big Crowd Present for Final Program of Popular Maryland Course — Jadaan Triumphs. i HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 29.— Mak- ] ing his first start since his poor performance ] in the rich Santa Anita Handicap staged in ] California, March 4, Mrs. Parker Corning a four-year-old colt, Thanksgiving, atoned for j that showing and one other failure this sea- . son. He administered a decisive defeat to . seven other high rating middle distance per- i formers to account for the twenty-seventh renewal of the 0,000 added Philadelphia Handicap, mile and one-sixteenth gallop i worth ,925 that was the headline attraction i on the closing program at Havre de Grace today. A product of William Elders breeding - farm in Hyde, Md., the score of the four-year-old ■ son of Bud Lerner was one of his ; greatest performances over a racing strip that was termed heavy. It was popular with l the large gathering out for the race. He ; reached the finish leading the locally-owned 1 Hypocrite of the Ral Par stable as another : Marylander, W. L. Brann,, furnished Chai-lephen - to be third over Isolater, from the ; Belair Stud. The latter led home in order • High Velocity, Burning Star, Bourbon King and Gerald. PETERS IN LIMELIGHT. The score of Thanksgiving, a four-ply j winner last season as a three-year-old, was 3 clearly earned and in a measure jockey M. Peters, who rode Graustark to an earlier p success on the card, was responsible for the 2 easy score of the Corning colt. Breaking r fourth when the start came in the principal ] race, Thanksgiving gave up much speed early in the contest to step into a clear lead j and he had his opponents driving behind him d ■when he unleashed another burst of speed j near the end to increase his lead. All during the early part of the contest t Bourbon King and Isolater raced at the e j | heels of the homebred gelding and they , made the pace a steady one when Thanksgiving ._ was asked to step six furlongs in n 1:14% and the mile in 1:42% over the treacherous t_ strip. BURNING STAR FAVORITE. With Thanksgiving holding sway near the end there was a strong battle for the runner-up prize with Hypocrite beating Challe-phen by one length. Isolater had no excuse other than" he was kept in the worst footing „. % by jockey R. Donoso for the better part of the trip, but the disappointment was the e showing of the favorite, Burning Star. The e Shandon Farm Stable cut little figure in the 13 contest over a racing strip he always relished. 1~ He left the starting point slowly and was never better than sixth, much to the dismay 3" of his handlers and backers. The time for the ranning was 1:49%. j Conditions were comfortable for the sport rt j and the attendance was one of the largest of 51 I the present meeting, although topped by the j gathering last Saturday.
