JOHNSTOWN • • — " ■ — ■ — GILDED KNIGHT JOHNSTOWN-GILDED KNIGHT! WHICH WILL WIN? Here are the two outstanding three-year-olds of the year, which will meet for the first time in the rich Preakness Stakes today. Both are undefeated during the current season, Johnstown capturing all four of the races in which he has started, including the Paumonok, Wood Memorial and the Kentucky Derby. Gilded Knight has three victories to his credit this year with notable successes in the Chesapeake and Survivor Stakes. Johnstown is owned by the Belair Stud, Gilded Knight belongs to the Wheatley Stable. This pair will be coupled with the Belair Studs Challenge, wliich is considered a doubtful starter. Both the star colts are trained by James Fitzsimmons and each is fit and ready to battle for the pot of gold, over 0,000, the winners share. The presence of Johnstown and Gilded Knight in the Preakness compensates for the small size of the field, and the 40,000 or more expected to crowd old Pimlico to the fences should certainly see a contest in keeping with the best traditions of the old established fixture and the great monetary value of the event. Todays Preakness Stakes will be the richest three-year-old race of 1939.
