Public Choice, Shadytown, Disappoints — Dahomey Graduates at First Asking and Returns 20.80 in Mutuels. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 12.— While Mrs. Edward Haughtons recently acquired Shady-town was disappointing those who made him a strong favorite, A. C. Snyders Pompeys Pillar registered a surprise victory in the seven furlongs fourth race, one of the better events on todays program at Churchill Downs. Charging down the track next to the rail under the urging of George South, the seven-year-old Pompey gelding got up near the end to score by a little more than a length as Shadytown, romping winner of his last engagement, was a soundly beaten fourth in the field of seven. The Cornhusker Stables Easy Sailing took down second honors, while Mrs. A. A. Bowers All Lady was third, a nose behind the runner-up and a good eight lengths before Shadytown. DOMINATES RUNNING. Shadytown and Take On dominated the running until they reached the head of the stretch and there they were joined by All Lady, Pompeys Pillar meanwhile racing far back of the leaders. Entering the straightaway, All Lady drew into a clear lead, Shadytown and Take On tiring, while Pompeys Pillar began to move up next to the rail. All Lady still looked a winner a sixteenth from the wire, but the Snyder horse was not to- be beaten and in the last seventy yards forged to the front and away from his rivals. Pompeys Pillar, paying almost 9 to 1 in the mutuels, ran the seven panels on a fast track in 1:25%. Skies were overcast most of the day, but a fair-sized crowd turned out for the card of eight races. The first race, a sprint at six furlongs for cheaper platers, resulted in a popular victory for B. E. Smiths Oddesa Knight, well handled by George Wallace. The three-year-old son of Transmute was in close quarters going down the back stretch, but Wallace got him into the clear entering the home straightaway and sent him on to victory by two lengths. Vanwind, a member of the mu-: tuel field, was second and Oddesa Upset just a nose away in third place. Canape treated fans to a rodeo show before the start, throwing his rider, Warren Cornay, and galloping off three-quarters of a mile. When the field was dispatched Cornay had his feet out of the stirrups and by the time he got them adjusted the horse was far back of the field. DAHOMEY SURPRISES. The Shady Brook Farms Dahomey, a son of Bostonian and Classic, overlooked in the ; betting, upset a band of maiden two-year-; olds in the five furlongs second race. It was his first public appearance. Although I fractious at the post, the Shady Brook geld-3 ing broke alertly and after a lively battle with Good Servant emerged victorious by a j neck. Columbias Boy, which had never been ; far back, moved up menacingly approaching the final furlong, but then hung and fin-l ished third, two and a half lengths behind Good Servant. Wowo, performing under the silks of • Lloyd and Hester, accounted for the third race, in which a dozen sprinters compared speed at three-quarters. Coming from behind in the run through the stretch under the vig-j orous handling of Porter Roberts, the Golden Guinea mare won by a head as Frozen Mask ran second and High One third. Frozen Mask, a sharp factor from the beginning, wore down the pacemaking Pelter just inside the last eighth and for a moment looked a winner, but she could not quite last and had to be content with the place, a length before High One.
