Nick Walls Ride Contributing Factor in Victory — Sassy Lady Defeats Odds-On Favorite, Red Eye. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 12.— American Daisy, the. three-year-old daughter of American Flag and Lazy Daisy, carried the silks of Mrs. Warren Kaine to victory in the best offering at Belmont Park today. Her score came in the Garden City Handicap, for three-year-olds of class "C," a gallop of a mile and a sixteenth. J. D. Norris Gridine raced to the place, and E. W. Duffys Chief Onaway, the top weight, was a distant third. American Daisy was closed at 7 to 1. Snow, the choice of the small field, after racing forwardly, finished last. The return of wintry weather had its effect on the attendance at the big Nassau County course, but the sport furnished was first class and a fairly large crowd was out. EARLY PACEMAKER. In this Garden City Handicap, Gridine was the one to cut out all the running. Basil Janies had the son of John P. Grier off first and after he had opened a lead of two lengths he took hold of the colt and rated him along on the rail. Snow was under restraint back of pace, and then came Chief Onaway and American Daisy racing closely lapped. Exploded had walked away from the post and was a bad last. Gridine held to his lead while under a ■ steadying restraint and he had no trouble standing off Snow when the Riddle colt made a challenge going to the stretch turn. . At the same time Haas moved with Chief Onaway, but he had no better fortune and after rounding into the stretch they both . dropped back beaten. It was after Gridine had been softened up a bit by these two challenges that Nick Wall . made his move with American Daisy. She ! charged on the outside until a furlong out she was well lapped on Gridine. He fought along for a few strides but the filly would not be denied and gradually drew away. Her winning margin was a length and a half. Gridine was a full four lengths before i Chief Onaway. The Duffy colt saved third . from Exploded by three lengths. Snow had . given up entirely in the final furlong and . was not persevered with by Wright when he was hopelessly beaten. SASSY LADY EASILY. Sassy Lady carried the silks of the Snow White Stable to an easy victory in the Artful I Purse, a six furlongs dash over the main l course, which was confined to three-year-old L fillies. The daughter of Flying Heels, ridden 1 by Ronnie Nash, was second choice at 4 to 1, but she scored over the Falaise Stables Red I Eye, considered so much the best she was 5 held at 11 to 20. Elwood Sachsenmaiers 5 Charlotte Girl, making her first appearance since last August at Saratoga, was third I over Despondent. With no delay at the post the six fillies left in good alignment and Red Eye and L Sassy Lady at once went out to lead the . others. At the end of the first furlong it I had become a two-horse race. Red Eye was 3 showing the way, but Sassy Lady raced closely after her and rounding into the long r stretch she drew alongside Red Eye. The ;| Petee-Wrack filly battled along for a few j strides, but Sassy Lady, with her pull of I eight pounds, shook her off under pressure • and then came on to win by three lengths. Charlotte Girl raced third all through the running and she finished at the heels of Red [ Eye, while Despondent, after being outrun t to the stretch, had no trouble running over r Blue Fairy and Miss Brief, the only other P starters.
