COCKEREL SURPRISE WINNER I L Accounts for Pimlico Nursery Stakes [ I in Colors of Alvin Untermyer. Skyflier Also Wins for Mr. Untermyer in t Secondary Attraction — Steeplechase Race to Little Woman. BALTIMORE, Md., May 12.— A mild upset occurred in the thirty-fifth running of the Pimlico Nursery, semi-final feature of the Maryland Jockey Clubs spring meeting this afternoon when Cockerel, representing Alvin Untermeyer, of New York, triumphed by half a length over Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts first-time starter, Now What. E. K. Bry-sons Imprudent, coupled with Arden Lass as an odds-on favorite, was another length and a half back. , The son of Transmute — Chickie, unplaced to Imprudent in his last three starts, after winning in his debut at Havre de Grace, found the five furlongs route of the Pimlico Nursery more to his liking as he successfully turned back his five rivals at scale weights. He ran the distance with Hilton Dabson in the saddle in 1:01 and earned ,820. Cockerel incidentally completed a double for Untermyer, trainer Hugh Dufford and j Dabson, although the rider didnt participate i in the victory of Skyflier,.the other winner from this stable. A good-sized crowd viewed the Nursery running as clear weather and a fast track was the order. The spectators included many ; j persons who have come here from distant points to witness the Preakness tomorrow. , FOUL CLAIM DISALLOWED. Now What had the most early speed in the Nursery and went into the turn with a couple of lengths to spare over Imprudent, which Irving Anderson was content to rate. Rounding the turn, Dabson sent Cockerel forward with a rush and the colt overlook Now What inside the furlong post, brushing him as he went by. He was unable to draw out as the Vanderbilt filly held on doggedly. Leo Fallon, Now Whats rider, claimed a foul but it was not allowed. Imprudent was shaken up vigorously In the stretch but she was unable to menace the leaders and gradually was losing ground towards the end to Wake Robin. Arden Lass and Engles Charm were outrun all the way. Skyflier, sporting the silks of Alvin Untermyer, proved easily best of the seven good three-year-olds that met at a mile and seventy yards in the Gunpowder Purse, the secondary attraction. The son of High Cloud gave Irving Anderson a double in reaching the finish six lengths before Balloter, the favorite, as Beacon Rock was another five lengths away. Tanganyika was a distant fourth. Anderson held Skyflier under strong restraint while closely following the pacemak- j i ; j ing Beacon Rock until well around the second turn. When given his head, the Untermyer colt went forward willingly and drew away without being urged. William M. Elders Hardy Miss easily accounted for the opening dash, although she had been nearly left at the post in a poor start. Under Irving Anderson the daughter of Bud Lerner and Hardy Fern rushed for-j ward rapidly after finding her stride and command approaching the stretch turn itook to draw out to a five-length victory. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Race Rider, a first-time starter, was second by a length over Brook Johns Lady Mowlee as Hazel W. was fourth among the nine maiden juveniles going four and a half furlongs. Disraeli, the favorite, lacked speed. Townsend B. Martins Distract, the favorite, got through a narrow opening along the rail in the stretch to win the second race, in which he was a stout favorite. His margin was three-fourths of a length over Mrs. W. Strawbridges Graeme Cracker as Night Play was another three lengths back. Kai-Min was fourth in the field of eleven ordinary platers going six furlongs. With three out of the five starters, which met for the claiming steeplechase, listed third on the card, missing at the close of the two-mile chase, Little Woman, from the J. H. C. Forbes stable, registered a hollow success when she led home W. M. Elders Walkaway. Making her first start of the season, the elderly daughter of Wrack was in front through the last mile of the number and defeated her lone opponent by the j length of the home stretch after the others, which included Little Dan, Swimalong and Quakerstreet, became eliminated through faulty jumping. After falling at the last fence when racing nearest to the winner, Little Dan, ridden by J. Meehan, was remounted to finish third. Jockey A. Scruton suffered a broken rib on his left side when tossed from Swimalong.
