Three Such Races to Be Offered Weekly— • j All Three Tracks at Big North Side Plant in Fine Condition. Turf racing over the mile grass course in the infield, one of the popular features of ! c the annual Arlington Park program, will I revived again this season, announced c Maj. Louis A. Beard, director of racing at ; c the North Side track. s Only one other track in the United States, a Hialeah Park in Florida, offers flat racing ! * over a grass course. On the soft, green- . I sward of Arlingtons infield at least three I J races a week will be run. This number • * and one more on the day preceding the I July 4 holiday are included in the first ten- - | day issue of the condition book, distributed I 1 today to horsemen by racing secretary R. S. . I j . Shelleys staff. 1 Track superintendent Harold Lamb has . J the turf course in the best condition since ; J was built and many horsemen are pointing , J their distance stars for these special events. Since these races are exceptionally popular with the rank and file of Arlington racegoers " it is not unlikely that more will be 1 i added later in the meeting, said Shelley. HEDGES MARK COURSE. J s Distances of the turf races range from a 1 I | , mile to a mile and a half. The inside limit z of the course is marked by thorn hedges on I : j j the turns and honeysuckle hedges along the 5 j backstretch with beacons being used along I the front stretch. An additional fifty-yard ] . j hedge has been added this year at the point t where the horses enter the first turn on ] ; the mile oval. Three of the six turf course time records 3 were written into the books here last year. • | Rhiniz equalled Boon Times 2:01 for aj] I I mile and three-sixteenths, Catchem set the e i mile and a quarter record at 2:08*5, and I ; Brandon Prince ran the mile and a half in i | 2:34Vb. Other Arlington turf records are: I j ; one mile, Big Beau, in 1:39; a mile and one-80 ~ sixteenths, Dark Woman, in 1:45%, and a i I mile and a furlong, Even Up, in 1:52%. Arlingtons three courses now are ready y for horses. The mile training track west of f the turf course and main track, is soft and 6 i springy with new topsoil of sandy loam. u I The main mile and a furlong racing strip is s perfectly groomed and Arlington officials s look for new records to stand alongside the two worlds records already set on it.
