Dead Heat in Second and Double Payoff in "Daily Double" — Gentle Knight Wins. DETROIT, Mich., June 21.— By far the best program of the week was offered at Detroit this afternoon. With midsummer weather prevailing patrons took advantage of the late opening to enjoy the sport in the cool of the late afternoon and evening. The crowd was equal to that of yesterday, when the gathering — swelled by ladies being guests of the management — was estimated at 9,000. Topping the program was the Northville Purse, a combination affair for three-year-olds and upward, and a crack band of seven ran six furlongs. Supporting the Northville was another six furlongs dash, this one for topnotch platers. Hayden Dupuy, who rode three winners yesterday, again was in the limelight, the Louisiana boy having seven mounts in the eight races. The Northville was the only eevnt in which he did not ride. RODRIGUEZ IN DEMAND. While Dupuy is enjoying the greatest popularity among the apprentice riders, the services of Enrique Rodriguez are in great demand for high weight assignments. The Cuban boy, now riding in his best form, had four mounts. Gentle Knight, fashionably-bred son of Sir Gallahad III. — Nimba made his local debut in auspicious fashion when he was a deci-; sive winner of the first race. A length and one-half back was Smith David, the favorite, and third went to-the fast-finishing Pedant. Pat Remillaid, also astride his first horse during the current meeting, rushed the win-I ner into a good lead during the opening quarter and, after permitting him to in- crease his advantage to six lengths, sat back for an easy ride. Parity chased the winner for five-eighths and then bore out badly entering the stretch. During the opening five-eighths, Smith David was far back, but made up ground rapidly thereafter, to close in determined fashion. There was some support for Lady Continued on ninth page. DETROITSJINE CARD Continued from first page. Gayheart, but she never was a factor, and the finish found her a badly beaten ninth. A dead heat, which necessitated two pay-, offs in the "Daily Double," came with the second race when Twinkle Feet and Incredible were so closely aligned the picture failed to separate them. Droop was third. Twinkle Feet did the pacemaking from the start and, after giving way to Incredible in the last stages, came again to finish even with her. Droop chased Twinkle Feet to the final furlong, where Incredible came down on the inside to supplant her I and take the lead, but the effort took too much out of her and when Twinkle Feet came again, she was unable to hold her slight advantage. Takus, began well from the bad start, but he was pinched back soon afterward and never was a factor, and again receiving strong support, Cania also failed. Orphan Lass, well regarded, held on to garner fourth laurels. The stable in charge of C. H. Ferguson will be sent to Arlington Park the latter part of the week.
