LATONIA, Ky.f July 28 Racing reaches Its climax tomorrow afternoon at Latonia, wher?, for the past twenty-six days twilight sport has been conducted with moderate success, and the Latonia Cup, although it has deteriorated in the last ten years from a stakes fixture of national prominence to an overnight handicap, dominates the final program, consisting of nine races. Cup racing in the United States has waned steadily in recent years, but Col. Matt J. Winn revived the marathon competition last season after a lapse of five years, with the view of bringing the contest back to its former eminence in racing. NEW DISTANCE. Nine thoroughbreds of ordinary quality make up the field that is to plod over a r.oute of two miles and seventy yards, a new distance insofar as the Latonia Cup is concerned, which has previously been held at two miles, a mile and three-quarters and two miles and a quarter. E. A. Bischoffs locally-owned Double R., which finished second to Russia last year in the revival of the route affair, was assigned top weight of 118 pounds and was regarded as a pronounced choice to gain the decision on the eve of the race. On numerous occasions, Double R. has demonstrated his route-running proclivities, but all of the geldings forays have been in the claiming division. Rated next to Double R. in the esteem of the handicapper is the filly Agnes Knight, a double winner at the meeting, which will handle eleven pounds less than the highly regarded Cincinnati colorbearer, with the remainder of the field graduating down from 105 pounds to 98 pounds, the latter feathery impost being given to Bar Exam. OTHER CONTENDERS. In addition to Double R. and Agnes Knight, the Latonia Cup field consists of Lina Mac, Seven Star, Mt. Sard, Laura Kiev, Hollywood .Ace, Pripalador, Bar Exam and Indications "point to all of overnight entrants facing starter Hamilton for the endurance-test. Another cup race graces the final card, this being the Gentlemens Cup Race, which has conclusively proved its popularity with amateur riders and racing fans alike in the past few seasons Eight horses have been named to engage in the six-furlongs sprint and these will be mounted by the best amateur reinsmen of the local riding clubs. Mr. Ryder Schell, who was victorious last year astride Charles Kranz Butch, will again have the mount on the Indianapolis turfmans entry in piloting Can-u-Tell.
