OLNEY WINS IN A ROMP Book Plate Threatens, but Is Unable to Get Up With Winner. Smallest Crowd of Meeting Present at Arlington Park J. Longden Resumes Winning Ways. ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., July 28 The Walmac Farm, maintained by R. W. Mcll-vain, of Chicago, provided the winner of todays feature at Arlington Park, in the three-year-old Olney, which defeated five others of his own age over six furlongs in the Peoria Purse. At home in the sloppy footing, the son of Burgoo King and Bottle Green ran the distance in 1:12, with Alfred Robertson at the reins, and won by three and a half lengths. Mrs. John D. Hertz Book Plate was second, and E. J. Ross Briery third, another two and a half lengths back. As a spectacle there wasnt much to the race. Olney, a ll-to-10 chance in the betting, broke in front and stayed there to the end. Robertson whipped his mount away from the post to get clear of Book Plate, but once the Walmac performer opened up a good lead he never again was seriously threatened. He had four lengths on Book Plate, which was always in second place, on the stretch turn, increased it to five approaching the final furlong and then just coasted the rest of the way. BRIERY THREATENS. Briery made up a little ground in the stretch to be third, -but was no menace to either of the leaders. He took third money, a length before Star Boarder, while Morstep and Chief Onaway were the only other con- There was a marked fall-off in todays attendance, due to threatening weather and the sloppy racing surface. In spite of the slippery footing, however, the sport was interesting and well backed horses accounted for their share of purses. . The first race resulted in a popular victory for Mrs. C. C. Winters French Bread, which stood a powerful drive at the hands of Johnny Longden, to get a head decision at the end of six furlongs. Star Bess was the pacemaking French Breads most persistent rival after the opening quarter and presented a strong challenge in the stretch, but could not pass the Winters filly and had to be content with second honors. Sanctity, outrun over the early furlongs, made a tremendous rush after reaching the stretch and made up much ground to finish third. HURRIGAL GRADUATES. After eight unsuccessful tries, H. S. Swifts Hurrigal graduated out of the maiden class by turning back eleven other two-year-olds over the five and a half furlongs of the second race. The daughter of Hadagal, ridden by Mike Caffarella, displayed little early speed, but after being brought to the outside on the stretch turn began to move up fast. Closing strongly, Hurrigal was up in the last sixteenth and drew out to win with a length and a half to spare. Arched showed the way to the final quarter and then Hadith, a son of Hadagal, forged to the front only to lost out later. The third race, a sprint of seven furlongs, saw L. M. Seversons Larry S. charge to a surprise victory under the guidance of Warren Van Tassel. Little Drift finished second, with Maleman third and the favorite, Fanfun, next. Larry S. was never far away, while Little Drift and Maleman were fighting each other for the place. After straightening up for the run through the stretch the Severson four-year-old, favoring the soft footing, gradually wore down the leaders and eventually scored by a half length. Little Drift, battling on gamely in the drive, out-finished Maleman to take the place by a head as Fanfun was another length back at the wire. LONGDEN SCORES. Longden rode his second winner when Harold Nellors All Lizzie, a pronounced favorite, ran away from her rivals in the fourth race, a test of five and a half furlongs, which attracted eight two-year-olds. All Lizzie raced past Duck Stans soon after the break, opened up a big lead and was never in serious danger of being overtaken the rest of the way. Longden had her in front by three lengths as she crossed the line of finish. Duck Stans, taken slightly in hand when outrun early, was put to pressure on the stretch turn, but she was no match for the winner.
