NO COMMENT BY PRESIDENT WASHINGTON, D. C, July 28. The burning political issue of the moment, the personal attack on Vice-President Garner by the CIO leader, John L. Lewis, was definitely side-stepped today by President Roosevelt when he recalled that he had declined comment two years ago when he was the subject of the blunt-spoken labor leaders wrath.-Asked for comment at his press conference on the Lewis characterization of Garner as a "labor-baiting, poker-playing, whiskey-drinking evil old man," Mr. Roosevelt, after a moments thought, merely reminded reporters that when the same gentleman had said something about the President of the United States a while ago, there was no comment. That ended the matter, as far as the Chief Executives press conference went. Presumably the President referred to the Lewis comeback to Mr. Roosevelts "a plague on both your houses" made during the heat of the sit-down strikes in 1937.
