SMALL FIELDS AT EMPIRE CITY Abmeres Makes Show of Opponents in Principal Race Jockey Peters Scores a Double Triumph. YONKERS, N. Y., July 28. Small fields, with not much class engaged, made the racing of the Empire City Association below the New York standard at the Hill Top course today. Of course, the principal reason for the lack of class in the fields is that the best horses have left for Saratoga Springs, and the rain of Thursday, brought a muddy track, resulting in the pruning down of the program considerably. The best lot to be shown under silks raced in the fifth, a mile and a sixteenth affair under claiming conditions. Only four went to the post, and Paul B. Codds Abmeres, always the choice, and ridden by M. Berg, made a show of his company, showing a decided liking for the soft footing, to lead from end to end. John Craigs Slattern took the place, and Mrs. G. H. Emicks Dunna-many was third over Landlubber, the only other starter. PETERS STARS. "Moose" Peters chalked up a riding double when he piloted A. G. Vanderbilts Race Rider and followed a score on that horse by landing Aerial Bomb winner for Isador Bieber in the first for the daughter of Ariel under the Bieber silks. Cuckoo, after frightening out many from the first race, was an offending favorite when beaten by Chief Mourner and Julius Caesar, but well-played horses were fairly successful throughout the afternoon. There was nothing to the best race of the day, for Abmeres was so much better than the others that Berg had only to sit still and let him romp along in front. Slattern was second all through the running, without ever becoming a threat, and Dunna-many at all times had more speed than Landlubber, which ran a dull race.
