Shy Guy Prevails in Clark Handicap" Free America Runs a Second in Fixture q Dixiana Colt Finishes Head Before Runner-Up; Armed Is z Third, Five Lengths Back -n CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 5. — Dixiana s Shy Guy, formidable * four-year-old son of Challedon — Tootsie ya Cake, carried the colors of his owner, Charles T. Fisher, to a game and well-de- served victory in the seventy-fifth running „" of the traditional Clark Handicap, sixth and . featured event on the afternoons program. Superbly handled by Conn McCreary, who - was completing a saddle triple for the day, Shy Guy assumed command nearing the " three-furlong marker while on the outside J and, in a long drive, held on tenaciously to ■*■ the conclusion of the one mile and one-1 sixteenth event to prevail by a head over Calumet Farms Free America. The latter s stablemate, the once mighty Armed, earned the third honors five lengths to the arrear of Free America and some 12 lengths before Helen S. Reinemans Dinner Hour, the only other starter. Race Nets ,350 • In registering his second important triumph of the 1949 season the winner picked up the ,350 winners portion of the gross purse of 0,975 and, under his top impost of 123 pounds negotiated the assigned distance in 1:45 Vs. Armed was the first away from the barrier as starter Reuben White sent away the Clark field in perfect alignment. Going into the first turn Shy Guy bumped Dinner Hour slightly and the incident had no decided effect whatsoever on the ultimate outcome. As the remainder of the group was content to permit Armed to set the slow early pace the third all-time money winner quickly sped into a two-length advantage with Shy Guy and Dinner Hour in closest attendance. This running order, underwent no decided change as the quarter was traversed in :25%, and the half in :50%. As the field curved into the far turn, McCreary roused Shy Guy somewhat and the game colt was not long in reaching the lead. Free America at this point also began to make his move and it was apparent that the eventful outcome of the Clark would be waged between these two. Turning into the home lane, Shy Guy held a half length advantage with Free America on the outside apparently having "dead aim" on the front runner. In true game-ness Shy Guy shook off repeated challenges by Free America and it is highly probable that if the afternoons feature had been a furlong farther the Dixiana performer would have maintained his slight advantage thereafter.
