I., N. Y., May 26. — Paddleduck, carrying the pink and black of the Greentree Stable, responded to the urging of jockey Ted Atkinson in the stretch run and wore down the leaders to win the High Fleet Classified Handicap, the best offering today. This event, over the mile distance, advanced the daughter of Blenheim II. and Dabchick for her major objective at this meeting, the Top Flight Handicap, to be contested the final week of this meeting. Paddleduck held, at the finish, a length and one-half advantage over Allies Pal, owned by S. D. Sidell, while in third place was Gay Mood, racing for John S. Phipps. The winner sped the distance over a fast track that had been wetted several times during the afternoon by brief showers, in 1:38 Vs. Seven started in the High Fleet, which was fashioned for fillies and mares, fhree-year-olds and over, and in proving the winner, Paddleduck stretched her Belmont winning skein to three. Several varieties of weather visited Belmont Park during the afternoon with drab skies predominating. A chill was in the air and on several occasions showers forced the crowd of 17,627 to seek points of shelter. Gay Mood Assumes Command The start of the High Fleet, named for George D. Wideners fleet campaigner of other years, was effected without undue delay and no apparent advantage was noted by grandstand observers. The field was well-bunched for the first few strides and then Gay Mood, one of the William Post-trained entry, surged to the front. The three-year-old was lightly burdened and she sped along at a good clip followed by Alfoxie, Allies Pal, Paddleduck, Back Talk, My Emma and Miss Request. These running positions were maintained for the Continued on Page Two Paddleduck Garners Third Straight Purse at Belmont Continued from Page One first quarter mile, but then Allies Pal surged up on the inside. The Sidell filly averted what appeared crowding when Alfoxie bore over. The latter then began to drop from contention while Gay Mood and Allies Pal continued to show the way in that order. At the stretch turn Allies Pal had gained the lead and Gay Mood drifted out as My Emma was sent through along the inner rail. When well settled for the stretch run, Atkinson, who had bided his time, began his move. Paddleduck responded courageously and at the final furlong marker had assumed command. She then began to add to her advantage as Allies Pal, under urging, was doing her best to retain her place. Gay Mood continued on steadily and, although tiring, held the others safe. My Emma, after making her bid at the stretch turn, began to falter while Miss Request, who had been outrun in the early stages, began to gain over tired starters. Leche Hombre, H. A. Dunns five-year-old, with Elwood Carter in the saddle, easily accounted for the Belmont Spring Maiden Steeplechase over the two-mile course. At the finish he held a three-length lead over Crispin Oglebays Lock and Key while Fall Guy, from the Auburn Farm, was third. Fonsilver and Polichi-nela n. finished in that order and rounded out the field. The Calumet Farm and jockey Steve Brooks continued their winning ways when Great Spirit surged up fast in the late stages to nose out the popular choice, Our Man Wm„ racing for Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs, in the second race, a six-furlong sprint. A dead heat for third place was posted when Top Pilot and Hyblaze finished on even [terms.
