JUDGES STAND *y charles hatton LEXINGTON, Ky„ May 26.— Dale Shaffer tells us he is well pleased with public response to the MRAs attractive cards, and he looks forward to seeing a good race in Mondays Col. F. M. Alger Memorial. We dont suppose any of his customers finds a keen horse race more enjoyable, and we expect that something pretty exciting is bound to occur when Shy Guy meets Papa Redbird in the Alger. Each has won a stake at the young Detroit Fair Grounds meet, and each seems to have come up to the Memorial Day run of a mile and a furlong at the top of his form. The club has enriched this stake with 5,000. Up to now the Fair Grounds has drawn larger audiences and play than in 48, except for one or two days. The turf sport is not unlike other busi-" nesses and amusements in the Motor City in that it is influenced to a degree by the auto industry, and of course the strike hasnt helped things, but everyone hopes for an early settlement. Meanwhile the operation of the MRA has been perfected so that crowds of 20,000 are now han-. died with a great deal of-facility, and the "tote" traffic has been speeded up notably. There are no tedious post parades and the public seems to prefer it that way. The MRA already has introduced a good many genuine "name horses" to Detroiters this summer, and we think there will be others, for such races as the 5,000 Cavalcade Stakes on July 2 and the 5,000 Champion Stakes on August 6. AAA Theres nothing like a rider who is in a winning streak to perk up the play, and Robert E. Lee Baird, Benny Civitello and Jerry West have followings at the Detroit Favorites Meet in Alger Cap Baird Sets Fast Pace ior Rival Riders Lincoln Crowds, Play, Show Increase Simla Freshened for MRA Competition Detroit Fair Grounds. Baird is filling Steve Brooks boots with Charley Fishers Dixiana establishment, and is setting a busy pace for rival riders at the meeting. He won on six- favorites in the course of the first eight cards, also with three second choices. Plain Ben Jones likes "a rider who can win on the second best horse sometimes." Apprentice T. Fico and Jimmy Combest also have won with three second choices. Baird, who is29, and comes from Huntsville, in Texas, seems able to ride most any sort of horse one has, which is a consideration of more importance than you might imagine. AAA Lincolns meet at Washington is picking up after a particularly slow start, due to the weather and conflicts with both Churchill Downs and Detroit Fair Grounds. General manager Pete ODonnell will offer the clubs best sport this week-end, with renewals of the 0,000 Steger on Saturday and the 5,000 Peabody Memorial on Monday. It will be interesting to see Herb Woolfs Delegate and Oscar Breaults With Pleasure hook up again in the Steger. In case it escaped you, With Pleasure was making his first appearance of the season when he was second to Delegate in the Crete on opening day. It also will be interesting to see the reformed plater, Cail-lou Rouge, in this fast company. "The original Lincoln Fields club was formed in 26, and the Steger was inaugurated at its first meeting. It never has been won by a really bad horse. Theres a theory that the era of a million-dollar-day-every-Saturday has passed, but Lincoln entertained 15,147 who played 34,932 in the grip of a cold wave last week-end. And it handled the largest mutuel for a single race in 48 when 00,471 was wagered on the Peabody Memorial. After all, Arlington had a ,000,000 day last season. AAA Duval A. "Duvie" Headley was here briefly from Detroit the other day to pick up reinforcements for the string he is training at the Fair Grounds. He was second to The Fat Lady with Louie Lee Haggins filly Stole in the Royal Oaks and has taken up Simla, who has freshened at the farm for several weeks. Simla is a very slight filly, but she is not unlike Capot and other Menows in that she always gives it the old school try. Were afraid that this is not characteristic of many modern breeds. H. P. Headley, who stands Menow at Beaumont, declares he long since gave up breeding from sulky, nervous stock, explaining "they age one too fast." By the way the aforesaid master of Manchester will be a consignor to Keene-lands Sales this summer, having nominated a filly by Heliopolis from Gaga and a colt by Half Crown out of Teddys Own. AAA Turfana: "Citation is breezing steadily ,"L_Paul Ebel-hardt observes, "and I feel confident he will win that ,000,000." . . . Among Calumets yearlings is a colt by Ponders sire out of Wistfuls dam. . . . Detroit trainers have complimented the management upon the careful policing of the stable area. . . . Warren Wright will offer some yearlings privately. ... He and Mrs. Wright have flown to Belmont for the Coaching Club Oaks. . . . Lincoln has a fresh infusion of several hundred Kentucky horses.
