BILLINGS — Leading money winner on the Illinois circuit last year with 12,650, has arrived at Washington Park" preparatory to another campaign on the Prairie State circuit. Greytown Seeks Fourth Win in Row Moved Up in Price In Claiming Event Sandslinger, Reproduction, Main Rivals Today in Mile Attraction at Washington WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., May 26. — Greytown, a gray gelding owned by K. D. Kepler and A. L. Eaton, who has displayed sparkling improvement while ringing up three consecutive victories in Illinois this season, goes after his fourth when he finds himself ambitiously placed against a field of ,500 milers in the feature event on tomorrows all-claiming program of the usual eight races. The four-year-old son of Johnstown — Laatokka, by Pharamond H., is to be opposed by 11 foes at six furlongs and there are several contenders who appear to have excellent chances of smashing the geldings skein. Greytown originally was cut out to be a first class campaigner, having been bred by the well known Kentucky owner and breeder, Hal Price Headley, who sold him to the Brolite Farm. Last season he raced on both the East and West Coasts against good company, but when he made his initial appearance of the season at Sportsmans Park he was dropped in against ,000 platers. As would be expected when a horse takes such a big drop down the class ladder, the halter brigade went into action and the Kepler-Eaton combine made what presently appears to be one of the bargain claims of the season. Greytown won the outing with consummate ease and next time out against ,500 company, he won even easier. Several days ago at this course he was jumped up against ,000 opposition and it was the same story — Greytown came home on the chin strap. From ,000 to ,500, however, is a big move forward and the fact that he must shoulder equal top weight of 120 pounds with Sandslinger, makes his task quite difficult. The distance of one mile appears to suit the gelding well and the condition of the course, which probably will be fast for a pleasing change, makes little difference. Those entered in the sprint are Mt. Pleasant Stables Sandslinger, Joe Ferraras Carmargo Bill, Mrs. John L. Oglesbys Potomac, R. Kirkpatrick and R. C. Adams Steeple Jack, C. L. Dupuys Verona Sands, Endovina and Alesias Teddy Reigh, Valley View Farms Born to Win, Mrs. D. A. Ewarts Easy Dough, D. C. Wilhelms Rousing Night, H. D. Maggios Up Grade, and Blossom Stables Reproduction. Won Four Races at New Orleans Sandlslinger, a veteran who captured four of his eight races at the New Orleans Fair Grounds during the winter, was given a shortf rest before making his seasonal bow in Illinois here the other day. The seven-year-old lagged during the early part of his six-furlong engagement against ,000 competition, but mustered a powerful charge through the stretch that found him finishing just a half length in back of Lady Lureen, with Verona Sands, Steeple Jack, War Ruler, Sir Bim, Donaris and Last Drink well in back of him. In view of the fact that he had hot raced since March 26, that effort should have done him a world of good. Mrs. Fern Blossom Feldman, who owns the Blossom Stable, hopes to get a good race from the five-year-old gelding, Reproduction, whom she claimed during the winter in Florida. Reproduction showed several fine performances in the Sunshine State and is reported to have shown excellent form in his early morning drills at this course. Potomac, who was formerly campaigned by Mrs. Feldman and who now runs in the interest of Mrs. John L. Oglesby, has yet to attain his best form in Illinois this year, but he is being dropped down in class and the mile of the feature particularly appears in his favor. Carmargo Bill, who showed , several fine races early in the Fair Grounds season, but who since has performed listlessly, is expected to improve. He ran last during the Pimlico spring session and finished last in a claimer similar to that of tomorrow. Steeple Jack is a steady sort, but was thoroughly beaten by Sandslinger in his last race. Verona Sands is not too badly placed, but improvement would be required to make her a contender. Teddy Reigh has started only once this year and did not race at all in 1948. It may be that hell need one or two more races before hell get back to his best form. Born to Wins most recent race against My Star, In Fra-ganti and others wasnt at all bad and he is being figured as a top contender.
