Gallant Gallant Fox Fox Lures Lures Twelve Twelve to to Post; Post; DenemarkTrioTops DenemarkTrioTops Bashford Bashford Manor Manor Cochise,GreekShip Each to Carry 126 Palestinian and Three Rings Next in Line in Rich Stake; Latter Requires Fast Track By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 11.— Jamaica ends its highly successful 36-day meeting tomorrow with the thirteenth running of the Gallant Fox Handicap as the feature attraction. This mile and three-sixteenths event, which has been increased this year to 0,000 added, has attracted a field of 12, headed by Brandywine Stables Cochise and Brookmeade Stables Greek Ship with 126 pounds each. Both horses are at home on the soft footing that is expected to prevail, although not specialists at that sort of going as was last years winner, Better Self. Cochise comes off a narrow victory in the Grey Lag Handicap, while Greek Ship, making his seasonal debut, was well-beaten in that race, but turned in a promising effort. Ovie Scurlock will ride Cochise, while Eddie Arcaro will be astride Greek Ship, who has drawn the extreme outside post position. Palestinians Recent Trial Excellent Isidor Biebers Palestinian and Mrs. Evelyn L. Hopkins Three Rings are next in the Gallant Fox weights with 123 each, but the latter is a doubtful starter, being allergic to moisture underfoot. Palestinian has shown little in his public appearances at this meeting, but his recent mile trial was one of the most impressive ever displayed in the history of Jamaica in the opinion of work watchers who were around when the Metropolitan Jockey Club track opened in 1903. Incidentally, Palestinians last victory was at the Gallant Fox distance and over this strip when he won the Westchester Handicap last fall. No rider has been named for Palestinian, who has been ridden by Bennie Green this spring. That boy will ride Renew or On the Mark for King Ranch tomorrow. Ted Atkinson has been engaged for Three Rings, but agent Nick Huff is probably already hustling another mount with Palestinian and Gustave Rings Lone Eagle being the only ones open. Atkinson was up on Lone Eagle when that widely traveled horse scored his only victory in this country at Hialeah. Lone Eagle gets in with 108 and has been pointing for the Gallant Fox, while On the Mark gets in with 107 and Renew carries two pounds less. The most dangerous of the others appear to be Rokeby Stables County Delight, Continued on Page Thirty-Nine Field of Twelve Seeks 0,000 Gallant Fox Cochise and Greek Ship Each To Take Up 126-Pound Burdens Continued from Page One 119; T. G. Bensons Lotowhite, 116, and Harry LaMontagnes Steel Blue, 109. County Delight was a very close third in the Grey Lag and might have won it all if a hole hadnt closed in Eric Guerins face at the head of the stretch. Since then, he traveled to Maryland to win the Dixie Handicap. This fellow has always been highly regarded by trainer Jim Ryan, but was unsound at two and three. This year his races have all been good and he has lost none of his form as his imposts* have gone up from the feathery 102 he carried into third place in the Widener at Hialeah. Lotowhite finished far back in the Grey Lag, but won his two previous starts here, including the Excelsior, and cant be disregarded. He will have the services of Conn McCreary, who should fit this stretch runner well. Steel Blue, who will be ridden by Warren Mehrtens, was acquired at the dispersal of the late Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks stable last fall and was probably the best buy at that auction. The gelded son of Blue Larkspur — Flaming Swords, a full-brother to Blue Swords, won here at a mile and a sixteenth in impressive style last week. Steel Blue was unable to win a stake last year, but was narrowly beaten by Sunglow in the Discovery Handicap at Aqueduct when that colt established a track record. The others in the Gallant Fox are Joe W. Browns Thelma Berger, 105, and Cherry-Oca Stables First Nighter, the light- weight of the party, with 102. Thelma Berger is a four-year-old filly who raced well at New Orleans and appears to like the distance, but seems up against it here. Keith Stuart will be in the saddle. First Nighter had his one moment of glory when he won the Massachusetts Handicap in a stunning upset a couple of years ago. Although he has finished many of his races well, he has never approximated that performance. Nick Wall will be in the saddle. Should 11 start, as seems probable, the Gallant Fox will have a gross value of 0,800, with a net value to the winner of 9,100. If Three Rings should start, the race will be worth 00 more, that. being the starting fee.
