Nine to Compete In Commonwealth De Luxe Shoulders 121 While Engaging All At Once, Brick, Abstract, Lambent at Suffolk By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 11. — Nine of the better handicap stars racing in New England were named with Thursdays closing of entries for the fif- , teenth running of tomorrows ,000 Com- , monwealth Handicap at Suffolk Downs. This morning one of the group, Bar-Sue Stables Outland, was declared from the first middle distance stake of the current , meeting. The eight remaining eligibles should offer an interesting test at the mile and a sixteenth route. Mrs. True Davis, Jr.s, De Luxe will be the starting high weight in the Commonwealth under 120 pounds and off the sprint race turned in last Saturday by the Calumet Farm cast-off, he should be one , of the choices in a wide open event. Cobble Stables Abstract, 118; J. W. Nizleks All At Once, 116; Oakhurst Farms Brick, 114; .Double M Farms Lambent, 112; E. E. Gaiges Peace Mission, 108; Tommy G. Mays Whirling Bat, 106 and Ralph Lowes Regal, 105 pounds complete *the line-up for . the week-end feature. De Luxe displayed a likeness of his old self in last Saturdays Governors Handicap and although he failed to finish better than fourth, he was beaten only a length and a quarter by such stalwarts as Algasir, All At Once and Dukes Gal. It was the first outing of the season for the son of Bull Lea. In previous seasons, De Luxe has been considered a better performer at the middle distances and with the Governors serving as a conditioner, he should atone for that defeat. His class has never been doubted. He beat representative fields in the King Philip Handicap and Narragan-sett Special at the Rhode Island mile track last year. In addition to the two major triumphs, De Luxe was third in the Aqueduct and All American Handicaps, the latter being his 1950 flna» at Atlantic City last fall. Won Empire Handicap Last Year All At Once is another member of tomorrows field who has established his class rating. After overcoming a series of incidents which kept him sidelined during the middle of last season, the Grand Slam colt began the comeback trail here, continued his success at Rockingham Park and wound up the season by scoring a stunning upset in the Empire City Handicap at Jamaica. After winning an overnight race at Tropical Park, All At Once again gained prominence with his victory in a division of the Hialeah Inaugural. That race ended the trips to the winning column, but in last Saturdays Governors Handicap, he again served notice that he is ready to get back into the select group of stake winners. Abstract won the Washington Handicap at Laurel last fall and was second in the Southern Maryland Handicap and third in the Bryan and OHara at Bowie. In five starts this year, the son of Isolater has won a pair of distance events, both being at Laurels spring meeting. In his only local appearance, about 10 days ago. Abstract was a stqut-closing fifth in sprint to suggest he will benefit that effort Whirling Bat lends added lustre to the Commonwealth Handicap. The only sophomore in the field, Whirling Bat has been I competing against the best of his age in feature races at New Orleans and in Maryland. The Whirlaway — Night Shadow colt gave a good account of himself in his juvenile . year here and went on to New Orleans , to win the Louisiana Derby. He also accounted . for three other"" feature races dur- . i ing the winter and then was third in the Chesapeake Stakes at Laurel this spring. Repetoire and Alerted, a pair of prominent t candidates for the impending Preakness, finished only a length and a half in front [ of the May colt in the Maryland race. In i his only appearance against older horses, Whirling Bat was second in a sprint behind [ the consistent halter at Laurel. Lambent showed good form in the handicap division during the latter weeks of the » past Florida season and also raced in i Havana, being beaten a nose in a 0,000 handicap by Sabaean. Brick, Regal and i Peace Mission appear to have a tough assignment . tomorrow, but each of the trio has turned in good races recently to warrant an outside chance.
