Stunts Carries Off Top Honors in Jamaica Event Wades Through Slop to Defeat Mucho Mas Over Two Lengths JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 11.— G. H. "Pete" Bostwicks Stunts indicated he may once again be a stout factor in the handicap division when he made a successful return to New York competition in the Jones Beach Purse at Jamaica today. The Hypnotist II. gelding took the track at the start of the mile and a sixteenth and waded to the wire a little more than two lengths before Hudson Valley Stables Mucho Mas, who was slightly favored over the winner. Ben P. Whitakers Deep Blue was almost two lengths away in third place, while Sanford Stud Farms Schroon was three lengths out of the money. Eddie Arcaro completed a double on Stunts, having won the third event on Sneak, and the veteran gelding paid .70 after covering the distance in 1:46% over a track that was several inches deep in soupy slop. Stunts had appeared in a semi-professional event at Camden early in April, finishing third behind Flying Wing and Man-chon, but was a fit horse today. Last year he won only two of his 10 starts, but, in 1949, was one of the leaders of the handicap division, a role he may be able to regain. Stunts came out of the gate as though jet propelled at the start of the Jones Beach and went into the clubhouse turn daylight before Khaki, who was more than a length before Quick Fire, Mucho Mas and Deep Blue, who were closely bunched. Stunts continued to lead by a couple of lengths in the run down the far side, while Quick Fire and Khaki quickly ran out of wind, floundering : iti the slippery going. Mucho Mas moved briskly into second place, followed by Deep Blue. Schroon was last at this stage, but began to move along the rail between the turns. Mucho Mas made a challenge in the upper stretch that caused Eddie Arcaro to sit down and ride hard on Stunts, but the favorites threat evaporated when he began to bear out sharply and finished beyond the middle of the track. Arcaro continued to drive on Stunts to the end. Deep Blue ran an improved race, while Schroon saved ground on the rail and ran over beaten horses at the end. The co-featured Knight Errant Purse was run Keeneland style, without benefit of sound, which was not appreciated by the New York patrons, many of whom didnt know the race had been run until Fred Caposella suddenly came on the air to announce that the result was not official. Fred W. Hoopers Heliowise scored a popular victory in the dash, coasting through the slop two and a half lengths before Gustave Rings Platoon, who led Edward M. OBriens Bank Account by another two lengths. King Ranchs Mission was a distant fourth and last. Mrs. G. D. Wideners Knowitall was scratched. Jack Colaneri rode Heliowise, a Heliopolis gelding, who was scoring his third straight and paid .70 after stepping the three-quarters in 1:12%.
