Ambrose Clarks Lone Fisherman displayed excellent jumping form here this afternoon to easily account for the thirty-eighth running of the Jervis Spencer Steeplechase Handicap under 148 pounds. Twelve lengths behind the winner came Joseph Smerskis Whatta Knight, who was almost a length front of Lazy F Ranchs Extra Points. Lone Fisherman, a winner over practically the same competition in a recent event at Middleburg, Va., hunts meeting, was nicely handled by Elwood Carter and was timed in 3:48% for the about two miles course, which included 15 obstacles. The winners share of the Spencer Purse was ,875, plus a handsome trophy ac cepted by Mrs. Francis Bellhouse, wife of Lone Fishermans trainer. The presentation was made by S. Bryce Wing, chairman of the National Steeplechase and Hunts Association, as well as a steward during this meeting. Whatta Knight did the majority of the running in the early stages of the Spencer, holding an eight-length advantage at the fourth fence and a three-length lead after eight jumps had been completed. Genan-coke proved the main threat through the first mile, as well as for the next half mile, Lone Fisherman was roused mildly by Carter entering the backstretch the last time, and the Clark representative responded readily to wrest command from Whatta Knight, as C. Mahlon Klines Good Marks became the lone fatality when he fell at the twelfth jump. Once on the front end, Lone Fisherman further emphasized his superiority by drawing clear steadily, as the bold rush of Extra Points faded after he had joined Whatta Knight at the final jump in the battle for runner-up honors.
