Eleven Eleven in in Peabody Peabody Memorial; Memorial; Greek Greek Ship Ship Heads Heads Suburban Suburban Has Eleven Rivals In Belmont Fixture Brookmeade Runner to Carry 126 While Meeting Cochise, County Delight and Lights Up By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 29. — An even dozen of the best handicap horses now in training have been named overnight for the sixty-fifth running of the 0,000 Suburban, traditional Memorial Day fixutre at Belmont Park. The field is headed by Brookmeade Stables Greek Ship with 126 pounds and the weights dip to a feathery 102 on Ogden Phipps Busanda. The Suburban is generally regarded as Americas premier handicap, though by no means the richest, and the roster of winners since 1884 is studded with memorable thoroughbreds ridden by equally memorable jockeys. Greek Ship will probably be a tepid favorite tomorrow, mainly because he will be ridden by Eddie Arcaro, who has already won the Suburban on Devil Diver, Assault and Vulcans Forge and will be attempting to add to his collection of stakes records, which already "includes four Derbys, four Preaknesses and five editions of the With- ■ ers. The four-year-old son of Heleopolis was a very close third behind County Delight and Palestinian in the Gallant Fox Handicap at a mile and three-sixtenths last out, after engaging in a mild bumping duel with Lotowhite near the sixteenth pole. Greek Ship lacked his usual early speed in that race, appearing to climb in the run down Jamaicas backstretch, but finished strongly. Greek Ships Main Rivals The chief rivals to Greek Ship in tomorrows mile and a quarter appear to be, in order of the weights, George D. Wideners Lights Up, Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs County Delight, 122;«Brandywine Stables Cochise, 120; Greentree Stables One Hitter, 118, and Mrs. Harry Trotseks Oil Capitol, 114. Mrs. E. L. Hopkins Three Rings has also been entered with 120 pounds and Dave Gorman slated to ride, but there is little chance that the track will be fast enough to suit the Blue Larkspur gelding. Lights Up, who will be ridden by George Hettinger, won an overnight race at Jamaica, then was a bang-up third, beaten a length for all the money by Casemate and Piet in the Metropolitan Mile. The Eight Thirty colt had trouble finding room Continued on Page Thirty-Nine I 1 Eleven Face Greek Ship In Renewal of Suburban Brookmeade Runner Carries 126 In 0,000 Belmont Park Stake Continued from Page One at the head of the stretch in that race and finished fastest of all once he got clear. : Last year, Lights Up showed abundant ; stamina in finishing second to Middle- : ground in the Belmont Stakes at a mile and a half here and won the Trayers at a 1 mile and a quarter. County Delight won the Dixie Handicap , and the Gallant Fox this year and is a vastly improved horse. Last winter be finished third in the Widener under 102 pounds, but has climbed steadily in recent months. Eric Guerin will be in the saddle : tomorrow. Cochise won the Grey Lag Handicap at Jamaica in impressive style, but turned in bad races in the Gallant Fox and Metropolitan, seeming to have suffered a complete loss of form. Ovie Scurlock will ride the gray son of Boswell. One Hitter also ran poorly in the Metropolitan, but this was his first start of the year. The diminutive son of Shut Out gained fame by twice beating Noor last year, but lacks the size to cope with trouble if caught in close quarters and all of his good races have been in small fields. He has drawn the outside post position for tomorrow, which may be of some benefit, despite meaning a loss of ground. Ted Atkinson, of course, will ride. Oil Capitol came East from Kentucky to run in the Metropolitan after having finished third in his only other start this year, a race won by his stablemate, Inseparable at Churchill Downs. The Mah-moud colt tired after six furlongs in the Mile Handicap,, but may improve and will have the services of his regular pilot, Ken Church. The lightweights in tomorrows Suburban are G. H. "Pete" Bostwicks Stunts and Gustave Rings Lone Eagle, 109 each; King Ranchs On the Mark, 106; Hal Price Headleys Aegina, 103, and Busanda, 102. The latter pair are fillies and only one member of that sex has been able to win the Suburban in the past 20 years, Harmonica leading from wire to wire under 109 pounds in 1948. Busanda Surprised in Alabama Aegina has showed little performance and a great deal of promise in her three seasons of racing. Busanda, however, was a surprise winner at a mile and a sixteenth here on Saturday and caused a much greater upset at Saratoga last year when she beat Next Move in the .Alabama. Stunts won his first start of the year at Jamaica, then was beaten here by Uncle Edgar at one mile and there is considerable doubt that he can get a mile and a quarter, no matter how lightly he is weighted. Lone Eagle, on the other hand, is a genuine router who compiled an excellent record while racing in England for Belair Stud. The son of Isolater won his first Start in this country the day he was purchased by Ring for 0,000 at Hialeah, but trainer C. M. "Chief" Feltner let up on him soon after that race and has been bringing him along slowly. Lone Eagle has been training exceptionally well at Jamaica and if able to overcome an aversion to having sand kicked in his face could be dangerous. I On the Mark is another "dark horse" who has never run back to the form he showed a couple of weeks before last years Kentucky Derby, when he briefly convinced trainer Max Hirsch that he was a better prospocet for the "Run for the Roses" than Middleground. On the Mark finished second in the Maryland and Dixie Handicaps, then was fifth in the Gallant Fox after being with the leaders for about a mile. Bill Boland will ride.
