This four-year-bid : Devil Diver colt was declared the official : winner only after the stewards had made i an inquiry into the running. 1 Charles Givens turned in a creditable 1 saddle performance astride Call Over and : had his mount home one length in front of : the odds-on favorite, F. Ambrose Clarks Tea -Maker. Mrs. E. ,duPont Weirs Royal Governor was a fast-closing third while beaten an additional head. The race was an exciting one from the outset and lost a prominent contender when Max Glucks Symposium floundered badly leaving the backstretch and fell heavily while being pulled up, pitching jockey Rocco Sisto over his head and well clear. The track veterinarian announced later that Symposium, a four-year-old gelded son of War Relic, had died of natural causes. Purchased from the Glen Riddle dispersal sale in Florida during th» past winter, Symposium won three of his four starts under trainer Charles Feltner and last raced in the Camden Handicap at Garden State, a race in which • he was victorious. Tidy Sum Sets Pace J. Graham Browns Tidy Sum, a speed merchant, spurted to the front leaving the gate and held an advantage of a length and a half over Call Over and Symposium after haying completed the opening quarter mile. With Symposium eliminated shortly thereafter, Call Over set sail for Tidy Sum and wrested command from that one late on the turn, as Tea-Maker moved an even closer- third while apparently well in hand. Call Over retained his advantage into the stretch as Tidy Sum continued on gamely while drifting out slightly. This forced out Call Over a bit and made it necessary for Arcaro to go to the center of the track with -Tea-Maker. Givens appeared quite confident in the final furlong as his mount cleverly retained a one-length lead over Tea-Maker, who appeared to have hung under urging. Royal Governor, after trailing the field by about 10 lengths along the backstretch, , bettered his position on the- turn and through the stretch and closed fastest of : all to qualify handsomely for Saturdays i ; Brandywine Handicap. | Nicholas Shuk, who has been the leading j . rider at three of the four meetings at which i he has competed this year, chalked up an i early saddle triple, completed when he ; ! scored an easy five-length triumph astride i Frank A.
