Michigan Nates DETROIT, Mich., May 29. Jack Armstrong, publicity director for Hazel Park, visited the Detroit race track and reported that 220 thoroughbreds are already in quarters at the West Suburban plant, which opens its season after the conclusion of the Michigan Racing Association meeting, July 28. Vince Mara, Jr., checked in from Pimlico and assumed his duties with the horse identification staff. Mara served in a like capacity at the local oval last season. J. W. Johnston, one of the leading trainers here last year, is much improved in health and he will leave his Hot Springs, Arkansas, home next week for Detroit. During Johnstons absence, H. H. Smith has been looking after the Johnston public stable thoroughbreds. Five more members of the Marion H. VanBerg stable arrived from Chicago to join the local division of the Nebraska-owned establishment. Those included in the shipment were Albulil, Madam Jeep, Henny Penny, a scheduled starter here Memorial Day; Equison, and Whammo. R. L. Irwin is foreman for the Detroit section of the VanBerg unit. Daniel Boone Hickey, veteran agent, announced that he has taken over the engagement book of jockey Elmo A. Roy, a free lance reinsman. Trainer M. Holubeshen bedded down Dollys Image, Dollys Rocket, and Zacross at Hazel Park and the trio is to race in Michigan this season under Mrs. Holube-shens silks. The shipment came from Churchill Downs. Trainer R. B. Berini arrived from Chicago with Royal Helio, Staters, and Fighting Fool. The former is the property of the Emerald Hill Stable, of Maurice White, Chicago, and the latter pair is to campaign here for Mrs. Berini. Joe Korjenek, head of the local Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau staff, announced that the organizations tattoo crew will be on duty at Hazel Park, Friday, June 1. Racing secretary Charles J. McLennan announced that entries at Hazel Park for the Michigan Racing Association meet will close at 10:15 a. m. and scratch time at the West Side course is 7:45 a. m. Entries close at the Detroit race track at 10:30 a. m. and scratch time 8:00 a. m.
