Run World Famous Epsom Derby Today; Turco, North Carolina American Hopes I Expect Thirty-Four Starters t ► To Seek English Prize With Race Regarded as Wide Open ; By VERNON MORGAN Reuters Sports Editor EPSOM, England, May 29. — The rain and cold wind which blew over Epsoms lovely green downs today does not augur well for" tomorrows Derby, Britains world famous horse race. But. whatever the : weather, hundreds of thousands will pack the stands and open downlands to watch the century-old race, results of which will be eagerly awaited in every part of the world. This year — Festival of Britain year — there is a record prize of 4,190 to be won and a field of record or near record proportions will be bidding for this important score. Among the owners of more than 30 runners are men and women of many nationalities and from many walks of life. The horses themselves have a strong international flavor with English, French, Irish and American bloodlines represented. The jockeys hail from Australia, Britain, France and Eire. To watch the spectacular 12-furlong event will be men and women of nearly every nationality under the sun, of varied races and creeds and religions, all at Epsom Downs with the sole purpose of being able to say, "We saw the Derby," and hopeful they will back the winner. King George will not be present, following his attack of influenza, but among those present will be Queen Elizabeth and many members of the Royal family. The race is so very open that the superstitious are more than ever turning to topical tips. Visitors from the Far East are supporting the favorite Chinese-owned, Ki Ming, hoping he lives up to his name which means, "Star of West." Those who put raincoats on today and shuddered in the biting wind while waiting for buses, said this meant they must support Le Vent The Wind in French, Raincheck, Wateringbury or Arctic Prince. The soothsayers favor Mystery, the navel men are backing Sun Compass, the fruit lovers like Fraise du Bois if they know this means wild strawberries in the un-grammatical French , and so it goes on to - : those with "Ardent Hope" that tomorrow night they will be in "Paradise Street." More probably the bookmakers will be. The going will be on the soft side if the week-end rain does not let up. The huge field will mean a greater than ever scramble around the dreaded hairpin bend at Tattenham Corner. The stewards are almost certain to give the jockeys a warning, tomorrow to take great care as they sweep around the notorious curve into the final stretch. From that point to the finish, the horses and jockeys will be battling up a straight course before wildly cheering men and women to the most coveted winning post in the world.
